Yesterday, I heard one my dogs screaming in the kennel. I had let them out in the large run for some play time. My female & my male had been rough-housing, and when I ran out.... I saw what looked like the female with a "death hold" on the males neck. That was actually not the case. But I didn't realize that at the time, and was yelling at them to stop... and stay. My dogs had never been in a fight... ever. The female was COMPLETELY covered in mud from the male trying to shake her off.
I finally got them at a stand still... and realized the females TEETH were STUCK in the males collar! I was just about to un-clip it when my husband ran out screaming (as the female was still wailing during all of this).... they started tossling again.. he was violently trying to "shake her off". My husband was able to grab and unclip the collar and it was over... EXTREMELY Frightening!!! (My husband had witnessed me in the kennel and thought I was in danger in the middle of a dog fight).
I looked over both dogs.. no injuries... so I thought. Then this afternoon, I go to pet my male and when I stroked my hands across his head and it revealed where the whites of his eyes were... BLOOD RED! LOOKED LIKE HIS EYES WERE BLEEDING! I immediately called the vet who said to come right over. I had not put 2 and 2 together until I was in the car. When I got there I explained yesterday's situation. And we both realized he had severe hemmoraging from being choked during that incident. Thank God (the vet said) that I knew what had happened, otherwise, she would not have been able to determine what the trauma had occured from. Started on some eye antibiotics with dex to take the inflammation down. My poor baby... I wish I had seen it sooner!!

And how ! Same thing happened to me once. This is why a lot of ppl say
dont let the dogs wear their collars unless they are out and about and
attached to leashes ...

OMG! Truly horrific. I wish all a speedy recovery. I agree, poor, poor guy! Thank goodness you were there and quick to act. I'm still shaking from seeing that! Poor you, too, I bet.

This happened to a couple of my dogs some years ago, only one got a leg stuck in the others collar, they had always gotten along fabulously before that,i had to cut the collar off which was not an easy task as it was sooo
tight, thankfully little damage to the dogs but i never leave collars on dogs now. They never got on together again,so i had to rehome one to my brother.

This is why you never, ever, ever, under any circumstances, leave collars on dogs out playing. EVER.

OMG I am definately glad he is OK. I 've never had anythijng that bad happen but I don't care for leaving collars on them, either. Grandpa has hs on but I think I will take it off just in case.

wow I'm sorry you have to go through this. but like the others our dogs never wear collars unless they leave the house going some where out in public. if they are in the car they wear their collar in case we are in an accident. but out in public to display their rabies tag which here is the law.

Lucky you were close enough to hear them. I had a similar thing happen about seventeen years ago with two of my sled dogs. I always left their limited slip collars ( wide nylon, with a big o-ring to hook them to gang line) on them...after that episode, I removed them from every body. It will scare common sense into ya when that happens.
Hope your boy has a speedy recovery.
