I think all dogs do have a smell and people who say their dog is smell-less, are probably not sensitive enough.

Having said that, I believe I personally have gotten used to the smell of my dogs, and thus don't mind it.

Rubbinbg a bit of talcum powder into the coat when brushing keeps the coat smelling fresh and makes long hair easier to groom out.

My boy stinks, always has! It's worse now because I'm pregnant and have "the super nose."  I would love to be able to pet him without gagging. Lol

I am planning on trying some of the tips mentioned.  Although, her smelling might get my yard fenced in quicker! LOL.
i will let you know how it goes.  Personally, her smell doesn't bother me.  If I had a problem with it, I wouldn't have a dog, much less a big dog.

Considering it's winter in most areas, you migh consider having a grooming professional bath and blow dry your dog. Prices around the country vary widely. but for a "average" GSD i would have charged $45 for a brush out, full bath, blow dry and clip the nail and clean the ears. Saves the owner time bathing their dog is less then perfect standards. (House bathtub, no blow dryer, dog dries itself on the rugs, hair clogging the drain and hard to rines the dog completly.) And you get a nice clean and fresh smelling pet without getting soaked or breaking your back.
If your dog was a long coat i sometimes charged more or if the dog was oversized. That took more time and products. But believe me, many a customer would try getting the dog clean at home only to show up with a wet, smelly, soapy dog and have me fix it. >:D
And i bet the dog thinks your hubby smells funny too.

Is your husband always complaining about the smell, or just at certain times, like if he comes in from being damp from the morning dew?  Wet dogs are stinky, no matter what!

Also,  if it isn't any thing in particular,  just a sensitve nose on your DH, here are some ideas in addition to what has already been suggested:

1. Start lighting a scented candle just before he is due to come home.

2. Spray the air with the air neutalizer.... like Febreeze, just before he is due to come home.

3. Take the dryer sheet and wipe the dog down, lightly, with it...) I've done that before with no ill effects, I will admit to it, lol, when Mojo's found a reason to roll in something disgusting and I couldn't give a bath right away), also, do this  just before he is due to come home.
