heard a lot of bad stories about how a newb will never get a decent breeding female from the euro folk and i can't blame them. so the plan i am hatching to get the dog i want is "rent" a female from it's owner and AI her with the semen i want from another country thus getting my pick of what i want in one generation without establishing an entire line of my own. i have the female picked and still deciding from about 3 sires. when the pups were born i would take my pick and the dam's owner would take and do what he wanted with the rest and also get cash for hire of his dam.
i would save money on an import that i would prolly get ripped off by some dodgy euro guy cos he would soon know i am not an expert. i would get the lines i think on my research would be exactly what i want. i of course would not be a breeder as i would have no more stock than what i started with except the new pup.
so what y'all think???

vk, i have had good luck getting pups out of germany & belgium. i would also consider a few breeders in netherlands as well.
i think the key is to be perfectly honest with them in terms of what you want and what sort of experience you have. the ones
i've dealt with did their level best to choose what i had asked for. i don't mean to step on anyone's toes, but i've had less
luck in dealing with u.s. breeders---not all, but some. perhaps, if i were a high level competitor, it would have been different.
i don't know.
do what you will, but if it were me, i'd rather take a chance on one pup than end up with a whole litter to try to place. AI is less
successful than natural & shipping a p.g. bitch can cause her to asimilate the pups.
just out of curiosity.....what exactly is it you're looking for?

p.g. = pregnant??, the female can stay at the owners place, easier to ship semen. i am only renting her uterus. on paper i am only asking for what every dam person ever asks for, it has become too much of a cliche to even ask it of a working dog. i have identified the female that has got what i want and whatever she lacks a male can compliment. altho i actually see it as thus - she will will add the agression and drive to the sperm donor. i am yet to find out hips and elbows of her parents/grandparents tho. she is good hips, OK elbows but have to verify all that.

I don't know if asking the question, or wondering if you are serious makes me look dumber, but here goes;
Where and from whom does someone "rent"a dog from?
I guess I can see the logic in the idea,but...?

haha, yes it does sound stupid hence the htread title "crazy idea..." but why not, this person has the female i want a pup from but no stud, he only used others studs as required which is not often. i pay for stud of my choice over his female and i get pick, the female's owner will profit from it financially as he will own the litter minus my pick depending on whatever the agreement is, i might own the litter and sell them, have not worked it out, geez the owner might like the stud i choose that much he will do his own breeding and i will just by a pup, same end result, i am not looking to make money or start breeding just trying to get a pup from a mating i think would work. surely i can't be the first to think of this. i don't want to buy the female or the stud lol, can't afford it and don't want that many dogs and don't want to be a breeder. is it that complicated?

sounds like what u want to to is reccomend a stud to the owner of the bitch, and offer then a deal along the lines of, "ill do the leg work, and pay stud fee, but i wont first pick".......in my opinion, if the bitch owner, likes what u have picked, and is gonna keep the rest, if u pay stud fee and do leg work, u should get first pick and FREE., pls make sure u dont get stuck wit them all. futhermore (not sure this is what u meant) but i wouldnt physically let a strangers prego dog live wit me, i dont want a prego moody bitch that doesnt know me well living in my house......... sounds like its an ideal that could work (like many other things in life) i think u need to have a very clear expectation (on paper) and in my opinion the bitch should live so close 2 u so u can act as a breedmaster, checkin on them once a week from birth til 8 weeks...................just my opinion..............

leasing a female is pretty common in the American show world. but honestly there is nothing about this deal that sounds particularly attractive. is the female considered to be of very high quality. would the expected offspring be something so hard to obtain that it justifies the risk and expense of AI and imported semen.

leasing does sound much better than renting :-) the female is considered to be of high quality only by me and presumably her owner, no breed expert but i know what i like when i see it. don't really care what official breed judges would say - they would be eaten in my world so their judgements are irrelevant and what has officialdom done for the GSD breed????
there is a risk and an expense in every breeding or puppy purchase is there not?
i also like having control of the process, some matings i would have liked to a pup from but the breeders have just expected me to trust their choice for me like i am some passive idiot that just puts money in their account and they send me a pup in the mail. i respect breeders know their own line better than anyone else but they will have to at least humour me that i am part of the puppy selection process. if they can't/ wont then my money goes elswhere...like the plan i am cooking up now.
i would show you pics/vids of the female but the owner knows nothing of this hence i will keep the details obscure untill if/when i talk to the owner. i don't even know if the studs i like have semen available?

VK, that is not true. The people who told you that a newbie can;t get a nice female don;t know where to go!...
Good luck with your new adventure and I sure hope all will work out beautifully.
And to add, you might have a little issue with the AI part. If a country does not allow AI, you will not be able to register the litter.

looks like you have it figured out pretty well so I can only say good luck and wonder the purpose of your post in the first place.
best,
Rik
