Hi guys

My GSD is 44 days pregnant today. Her belly is rounder and her tuck-up is almost gone, her vulva is getting softer/puffy and more "limp" on the tip. Her in particular, this is her first litter, and as always, we took all tests to ensure she is in condition to be a mum.

However a few days ago, she decided she didn't want to eat anymore. Which is odd because she didn't really get morning sickness during her 3rd and 4th week.
We even increased her kibble already by a half cup. I feed her Petcurean's Go Natural Chicken formula, which she has always loved.

But now, at 6 weeks, she is so hard to feed. She'd only eat half her meal and it would literally take 40 minutes before she even bothers to start eating it. (Thisbreaks my 20-minute rule in general, wherein finished or not I take the dish out after 20 min. She's excused given her pregnancy)

Of course I considered that her tummy is full of pups so I started to feed her three times. That didn't work, resulting to three half eaten meals wheren each time it would take about 40 mintues of staring at her food before she eats it.

Kindly asking for your help. Is this normal? I find it very frustrating especially now that it's the last 3 weeks and the pups are supposedly increasing in size the most.
Or a late case of morning sickness?

Thanks.

well, is this the same dog as you tryed last time and was a false preganacy?
first thing to do is get an ultrasound done to make sure she is pregant this time.

the systom she is having are not normal signs, but i did have a girl show these same signs too on her first litter. the best  thing is find something she wants to eat, alot of dogs do go off feed and there are many never show morning sickness, so each female is very different.

i honestly would not feed her any more feed till you know forsure she is pregant, go get an ultrasound , why take chances.

My GSD girl has extremely low food drive (the type who nibbles at food after staring at it for a half hour plus, and then leaves half of it un-eaten) and hence I am scared to death of breeding her, since she might just decide to go off her food, mid-way through a pregnancy, and hurt the growing pups in the tummy.   Interested to hear further comments on the thread regarding the situation mentioned here.

Hi

Yup confirmed pregnant. She wasn't conceiving before because we bred her too early. She had her LH peak day 18.

Well today we tried mixing canned food which she ate. That's two cups at a go with canned food topping.
Tried it again a second time and she just pushed the kibble out to get the canned food.

I tried mixing it in really well so she can't pick.
She ended up quitting since she can't isolate the kibble canned.

I am not certain why she is being picky. She HAS NEVER tasted candy or scraps AT ALL. So in essence she shouldn't know what she's missing and be content with her 5 star food.
Last week her appetite was waning but I was still able to persuade her to finish her meals. Now it's impossible.

What's her energy level like? Have you taken her temperature?

She's normal, like she gets excited when I'm there. She still likes to bite her bones and steal my other dog's bones.

i am glad you now know she is truly pregnant , that is really good news.

well like i had said before i did have one female on her first litter truely go off her feed  from 3 weeks all the way till the pups were born and what i mean is  she was lucky to eat a cup of food at most , i did the gravy that was the best ,  cooked or raw meat may be a good idea to try that worked for my female. if the can food is working give her that then , you just want to get as much weight on your girl as you can now , the pups are going to take alot from her.  and make sure after they are born that the mom does start to eat,  if she is not eating well i would give her a calicum supp or some cottage chesse, cause my female after she had pups still did not want to eat much for 2  weeks, and she was sick cause of low cal by 3 weeks, so please watch her closely.

i will say that this is not normal but does happen , as one of my females did this her first time  and  on her 2nd  and later time she was fine , so  i dont think it will happen the next time you breed her.

good luck -

This sounds exactly like what Rose did while she was pregnant.   The advice I got from my vet, whatever it takes, get her to eat.  If she will only eat the soft food, give her only the soft food.    By the end of Rose's pregnancy, the only thing she would eat was cooked chicken with poultry herbs (yes, it had to have the herbs) and "moist and meaty" dog food (I know, nothing but crap, but again, the goal was to get her to eat).

A few weeks of crap food will not hurt her or the puppies.   Also having to change the food a few times will not hurt either.

If you need to, talk to your vet about some pre-natal vitamins.  Be careful on any calcium and iron supplements.  My researched showed this could be a bad thing.  Use supplements in moderation.   I always think that nature is better.  If your vet says calcium, give her yogurt or cottage cheese.

Have fun.   Whelping and new puppies bring so much joy.  Make sure you have vanilla ice cream on hand for the whelping.  A spool full after each delivery helps the mom with contractions.

Calcuim is fine to give once  the pups are whelped, i would not give any vit or cal  , when she is pregnant , not a good idea.

i also use for whelping  ice cream and broth over water too.

good luck and please do tell us what your girl ends on having , we all would love to hear and see pics.

Good luck

Instead of canned, which is really nasty stuff, maybe try some beef cut from one animal.
