My understanding is that puppies are more able to convert 18-Carbon Omega 3 fatty acid into 20-C and 22-C DHA and EPA etc than adult dogs; so flaxseed in puppy food is actually more useful and sufficient.
The conversion of 18-carbon omega 3 in adults is very slow and inefficient. The flaxseed in adult dog food may be enough for routine maintenance, but for adults during reproduction and lactation, fish oil is much better than flaxseed.
Have you read the same?
The diet of wild reproductive dogs in landlocked areas is lower in DHA and EPA than ideal, it should follow.

I use Chia seeds as they have more Omega than flax and they are more expensive. :(

Flaxseed makes some of my dogs itch....and I like the benefits for joints of salmon oil..

Vitamin C works very well for joints as it rebuilds synovial fluid to keep them lubricated.

Dogs can not efficiently convert ALA to DHA.....even in puppies...their ability is limited. This is why Omega 3 fatty acids are best supplemented in the form of fish oils rather then plant sources.

Very dramatic.

Yes, 2 of my 4 cannot take flax of any type, itch like crazy within hours of getting it. Use coconut oil 3 days/week along with Salmon Oil capsule with Vit E daily. Coconut oil has definitely slowed down the shedding. Great days everyone Nan
