Hello,
I have a problem on my hands now. My six month old male GSD pup bolted off during ball retrieve game upon seeing a stray dog. What followed was very painful to me and more painful to the puppy. He got hit on the left upper thigh and left penis. As a result there was some bleeding from the penis followed by cystitis. He was unable to urinate in one-go for few days and has now recovered more or less. The clot has disappeared and he is urinating in one-go. He was put on Cefixime 200 mg b.i.d.  He is still on the tablets and will be for 2 weeks. The accident took place on 28-10-2012.  The appetite is not diminished and eats with gusto.
Now the another part is that he was limping after the hit. I took him to vet who diagnosed the limping due to strain of the upper thigh muscle. The upper thigh muscle was tender on palpation. The vet gave him a shot of Flunixine Meglumine and I gave him Meloxicam 7.5 mg b.i.d for 5 days. The limp has reduced and he walks normally with all his feet, sleeps, stands, sits without any discomfort. The upper thigh muscle is not tender now. Only thing is that he cannot trot and run. However, I just took a precautionary radiograph of the the femur. There is small fracture line involving the cortex. I have highlighted with yellow circle. Will he be okay and start running and playing normally. How much time does it take to heal.
Regards,
Gautam

Has your vet advised you on this fracture? I would think a couple weeks of quiet exercise to allow healing, limited to leash walking to prevent another accident & to limit stress on the healing bone, possibly even 4 weeks without trotting, running, jumping, or rough play. no ball chasing, etc...but follow your vets advise. jackie harris

This is called a  green stick fracture that may or may not need to be casted. I generally tend to err on the side of caution with a dog, so would restrict his exercise for a few weeks and consult my vet about any additional treatment.

definately go with your vet's advice.  and, as always, err on the side of caution - if he says restrict activity for 3-4 weeks - I'd do it for LONGER -- just to be sure you didn't rush things - even tho the pup "seems fine" at some earlier point.

This is my biggest fear - I've had nightmares that my 7 month old pup will meet up with an accident and get injured. Recently at a breed show - he became very friendly with a young golden retreiver pup - and they played quite crazy -- both on leash --  next thing i know -- blood all over the Golden's face - but from my pup's tongue !!!  he didn't skip a  beat  --  a piece of ice and 4 minutes later - he was ready to go again --  it just scares me - that the stupidest  little thing can result in some huge problem.

Hope your pup is doing better very soon .  Best thing is he's young - and the young heal well and usually quickly...

Yeah he is restrained from jumping. He cannot trott or run. He is confined to the kennel in the afternoons and indoors rest of the time.

What did the vet say about it?

Sorry for the late reply. The vet told me that its only a minor thing and advised me to give it rest!

I'm with Pineridge. Follow the vets advice and add a week or two for luck. So easy for them to make a simple injury much worse just by being silly.

I am so neutotic I would take the pup to an orthopedist if there was a definite fracture.
