Hi
When puppies are 2 months old they are chubby and the bones look heavy (i.e. width). However, when they reach 5-6 months of age that heaviness of bones goes away and they appear longer and thinner. Longer is due to vertical growth. But what about width of the bone? I spoke to a breeder yesterday who told me that insufficient fat is responsible for that. He also told me that commercial foods are responsible for that. I really want to know why this happens?

It's just a growth spurt and most breeds go through it. Some call it the ugly stage. Once they go through that they will start filling out again and everything will catch up..........

At what months do we so growth spurts in a GSD Puppy?

Some say 3 to 5 months and some say 4 to 8 months.

I am more into 6-12 months and maybe a little longer depending on the dog and it's lines. I say that because some lines mature slower then others. Actually a dog doesn't reach it's full maturity until about 3 yrs old. My boy is from very slow maturing lines and he didn't reach full maturity until almost 5. My advice is to keep your puppy lean, where you can at least see the last rib--don't think you can make it grow faster or get out of the gangly stage faster by overfeeding. Extra weight is hard on their joints. If you are feeding a good food no supplements are needed and please do not give your puppy extra calcium.
