hello all, i have 2 gsds. 1 male, 2 and a half year old and a female who is 8 months old. i did not know my female was in heat so i had both of them together in the yard until i hired a trainer who told me she is in her last day or two of heat cycle...if they have crossed how am i sposed to know? and if they have is there any way we can not have puppies(exept spaying)? and what are the concequences on the female if she has puppies in first heat?

Your vet can give her an injection [that is sort of like the morning after pill for humans] so that if she is
pregnant it won't take - but get the vet to explain carefully the pros and cons of this before s/he injects
your bitch, as there can be after-effects.
And then go and buy a good book on how to take care of dogs, and read it.

How does your trainer know she is in the last day or two of heat, unless he knows WHEN she she came in? The shot only works within the first twenty four hours after breeding, I'm pretty sure. Have you seen the female standing with your male flipping her tail over? Have you seen him trying to jump on her?

And just so you all know, my friends  bitch died of liver cancer after receiving that shot, very high dose of estrogen I believe it is and some other stuff not at all what I would call safe.  She is better off having the puppies.  You can ultrasound her at about 28 days to see what might be there.  Otherwise I would not do anything else except maybe spay her now.  That is about all  you can do and really again I think she is better off having the puppies and spaying after full maturity.  It is possible that it did not take also.  Nan

How would the trainer know when the last day or two is??? That doesn't make sense. I cannot believe that you wouldn't notice anything odd for weeks on end and now a "trainer" somehow knows when her last day will be?

You're sure he said last and not first? You've seen NO odd behavior or blood or anything to suggest she was in heat?

I'm with Jenni, that's a little odd that your trainer knew her heat cycle and you didn't. But I don't recommend the shot. We've used it at work, it's typically used in larger animals, not in dogs or cats, and can have adverse effects, like liver damage as stated earlier. Best way is to take her to a vet and see if there are any signs of pregnancy, although it may be too early.

Just wanted to chime in my agreement here. I would let her have the puppies. I have read and discussed too much about those shots and myself I would never give them. Also I don't think from what has been said I would trust this trainer cause unless he was around 24/7 I doubt he knows.................

I asked my vet about the shots and she said it is much safer for the female to have the puppies. She does not recommend giving the shot.

Yes, I do recall the brother-sister Oops litter, where I think, the female was impregnated at 9 months. That breeder allowed the puppies to be born. He even ended up selling them, but at a discount.
