Conspicuous

by Conspicuous on 09 September 2012 - 01:09

I am SO MAD at myself! I left her for 30 seconds and it was gone. I ALWAYS crate her if I can't watch her, but did I today?? OH NO, I was only going to be ONE MINUTE and she was happily chewing a new bully stick.

Called emerg. vet. Besides doing an xray, what are they going to do? They said NOT to induce vomiting. If I take her for an xray and they just going to say "yep, there it is, wait to see if she passes it" then it's not really worth dragging her down there is it?

Should I just wait and see? Our Labs have eaten beer caps before, but I think they were older.

She's 40 lbs now, if size makes a difference?

Oh shoot, I am so dumb, I hope my girl will be ok!

Should I wait? What would you guys do?

She can pass it;  I would give her a couple slices of bread with her dinner that should wrap around it and help to pass in through; otherwise wait and watch her stools.  BOL  Nan

I would take her to the vet. Was it a beer bottle cap? Or a pop top cap? Either one, though, is not good. Be calm, and get her to the vet.

Well, when a dog has eaten glass, or is thought to have ingested sewing needles or safety pins, the emergency clinics will generally recommend you obtain a bag of cotton balls--and they need to be real cotton, not the synthetic type--and a quart of heavy cream.  Pour the cream into a bowl, and soak each cotton ball in the cream until it is completely saturated with it...then feed the cream-soaked cotton ball to the pup.  Repeat the process several times until the pup has ingested enough of the cotton balls to surround the bottle cap as it's moving through the digestive process--you'll probably need to feed at least a handful or two, since they lose their volume once they've reached their saturation point with the cream.  Suprisingly, the pup will usually readily eat the cream-drenched cotton balls, so you shouldn't try to force-feed them to the pup.

From the time you've fed the cotton balls onward, you will now need to examine--and I do mean examine each and every stool she passes until you have confirmed that she has passed the bottle cap.  If it isn't passed by Monday, you will need to take her into the vet and have an x-ray done to locate the cap, and it may need to be removed surgically.  But the cream-soaked cotton balls given shortly after the dog has ingested something sharp like this generally saves the day by enrobing the object while it's still in the stomach, and it's able to pass through the dog's intestinal tract safely.

Good luck, and let us know how she's doing?

watch out for obstruction..essentially vomitting. Some bulk forming foods should be ok.

Have a friend that has a Pittbull who ate an entire pack of razor blades, passed them fine. And ate a lightbulb. Passed it fine. I wouldn't panic right off, but if there is any vomiting or signs of intestinal discomfort take her in.

Are you positive she ate it? I've freaked out only to find the object I thought had been eaten, say, under the couch a day later. You will panic if you can't find it over the next few days in her stools. They aren't THAT sharp; I would not be panicking but would instead take Hexe's advice, if you're going to do anything at all. What are beer tops made of? I worry about certain metals more than the presence of the foreign object itself.

Jenni, that's actually my major concern if the pup ate this bottle cap--if it's got zinc in it, and just lays in the stomach instead of passing through as it should, the acids of the gut will begin to leach out the zinc, and in a puppy can cause zinc poisoning rather quickly.  The worst that will happen with feeding the creamed cotton balls is that ya gotta go buy some cotton balls and heavy cream if you don't have any in the house. It won't constipate the pup, and it won't obstruct, either.

The only risk is intestinal obstruction. Absorption of zinc is not a risk...

Old remedy 6 slices of wheat bread with olive oil...have dog eat this and usually the wheat bred in combination with the olive oil, forms around the cap and dog should pass fine.  Do it now and if you don't have the wheat send someone out to get it. We've done this before at my job with others dogs in instances like this and its worked.  Do you have enulose in the house?  Good luck, hope she will be fine.
