Hi All, Husband and I were just wondering if anyone has any opinions about their pets (dogs in particular) acting strange during a human pregnancy. Let me explain, Nick and I have been unsucessfully been trying to have a child. While we've had many cases of missed cycles, never a positive test. Anywho, as anyone who has been following up on Beau and I (Beau's the GSD) you'll know Beau and I are extremely closely bonded to each other. Lately, he has been acting very clingy, submissive and very gentle around me, which he has NEVER EVER done before. He's never been THIS affectionate or clingy, to the point where he will actually physically push Nick away from me. Because hubby and I have been through the missed "lady time" stuff before, only being a week past, I haven't tested yet. Beau has only started doing this the last two weeks or so. Sooo, my question is this: has anyone experienced something similar, almost where the pet "knew" before you/significant other did and how did their behaviour change? Sorry about typos or grammer, typing from my cell phone. FEEL FREE TO PM ME IF YOU PREFER.

I have heard stories of this. I do believe dogs know, probably before we do.

Well, first, congratulations are in order for you, KellyJ! Second, I saw that website too, just wasn't sure if anyone here could confirm or deny. I swear, he is so up my ass right now, I'm almost worried he's sick. I assumed there might be some personality changes but he's almost a basket case over me and it's making me worry for him. Guess we'll see when I get the courage up to test LOL

My moms Golden would stare at her stomach and be super clingy while she was pregnant with my little sister.

Good luck. :)

It's certainly possible...there are changes to the body's chemistry once an egg is fertilized and implanted in the uterus, so I don't think it would be a stretch to postulate that a dog could pick up on a change in the person's body odor that is imperceptable to us--after all, that's the present operating theory as to how dogs which alert to impending epileptic episodes, or radical changes in blood glucose level, detect the condition to which they alert their person.  Why chouldn't it be the same principle in this instance?  It's also possible that the dog isn't so much detecting that you've conceived, but rather responding to subtle changes in your stress levels and emotional state as you try to make yourself feign indifference, which would affect your cortisol levels and consequently alter your normal scent from a dog's point of view...

Thanks for the responces, everyone! The ONLY reason we are waiting to test is because we've seen this song and dance from my body before, but certainly never from Beau. Hoping maybe he knows something we don't. Guess we'll know in a few days and I'll update this post with results either way. Fingers, toes and paws crossed for us, please!

I have a stallion that began behaving much calmer with me when I was pregnant. I noticed him acting this way when I was two weeks along before I knew I was for sure pg. The hormonal changes are easy for animals to smell. It sounds like you may be pg!
