Do any of you guys with dark sables get this question on your dogs?  In person (for some reason pictures don't show as well) I could see his face as being like one, but I'm getting asked more and more if Auggie (my 8 and 1/2 month old pup) is a Belgian Malinois.  I don't know if it's just his lean structure, straight back (I think people around here are used to sloped dogs on tv when it comes to Shepherds) or what, but he gets called that more than anything.   He did so well today when I took him to town.  We went in to Lowes, and he's walking next to me the entire time, confident about everything, and just did very well.   I can tell some people are already scared of him though (because of his looks).

I got asked it Xena, the one in my avitar, was part Keeshound. I have had a few people ask if she was part Malinois too. I just dont think people are use to seeing a sable GSD

Many people have mistaken my red sable female (she's a tiny girl of about 60lbs and lean) as a Mali. They're also
not used to seeing a 3 yr old so small. She's a small/normal size girl with the brain of a Mali LOL!!!

melba 60 lbs is a good size female.  Honestly I was surprised these people even knew what Mals were.....seriously.   I would say Auggie got the speed of a Mal, but holy cow I think he's part Cheetah.

Jyl I'm just not seeing it lol, not the Keeshond anyway.  They're so fluffy from the pictures I looked up.

Speaking of Mals and Shepherds.  Has anyone on here seen the movie "Defiance".  The guy who plays the new James Bond (Daniel Craig) is in it.  In the movie there are a couple of very, very dark sable German Shepherds (it's a movie based on a true story back in World War 2 regarding a certain part of the Jewish people who basically ended up fighting back and surviving while they lived/hid in the woods.  A few times they had to go to other places)  but there is one dog in the movie I'm not sure if it was a Mal or Shepherd. They didn't show a good side shot of it, but it clearly was trained.  That dog lit up like a fire cracker when it saw her, but ended up going after her bag first......and then her. She shot it when it jumped on her after that (if that would have been real life it would have gotten her before she got the gun out, and would not have gone for the bag first if it was trained to guard) but I'm curious as to if anyone has seen the movie and knows. I'll see if I can't find a video clip of it online.

I get is that a Malinois? A chow? A Keeshound? A wolf dog? I'm like, um no, she's a German Shepherd. Then I get really?! I've never seen one like that! Um, no she's a puppy, she's a sable, and she's a possible long-coat. She's not Rin-tin-tin, she's not a typical saddle. But she's a Shepherd.

Hey.....be glad their not asking if your black GSD (who has import parents) is a lab cross .
I swear if it's not Rin Tin Tin or Jerry Lee (in color) most people think it's mutt.

There needs to be a movie made with a Black and Sable GSD in it that become's a hit.......Then......maybe joe public will realize that there is more than one color of GSD out there.

People ask me what breed Dugan (v. Eichenluft) is all the time. One time at a herding trial, a German Shepherd Breeder asked me what he was. When I told her, she disagreed with me!  Can you believe that!

Brandi that's hilarious! Some people who call themselves breeders don't realize there are other lines besides what they breed.

Macrowe1,
I know right.
How can one be a breeder of German Shepherds and not know what a Sable GSD is? Duh... That Breeder needs to "bust out" the GSD history book.

I got the 'what's he mixed with?' last weekend when I took my sable male to the pet store.

I have noticed that people are a lot more leery of my sable shepherds than of my yellow lab or my father's black labs.    The one experience that sticks with me most was in Lowe's this past spring.  A small family and the daughter asked her parents about asking if she could pet the dogs and the father said 'no, honey those are military service dogs.'

As neither of my dogs were wearing vests or any sort of harness (and neither were my husband or I; we're civilians) I was surprised at the man's assumption.  He wasn't rude about it, in fact he sounded very respectful and they had moved away before I had a chance to correct them.
