Joan recommended that I ask you people about the pros/cons of breeding my dog to Charik. Here's the mating test:  http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/german_shepherd_dog/breeding.result?fadir=576475&modir=524500.

klcabe, if you haven't already done so, I suggest you read through this recent thread, as there is a great deal of discussion as to what linebreeding on Tom produces as well as suggestions as to what other lines mix well with him.

by klcabe on 24 August 2012 - 01:08

Should I post the question to that thread, you think??

This pedigree's linebreeding is 3:3 on Tom Leefdaalhof, 4:4 on Jago Lindenhalle, and 5:5 on Falka Lindenhalle, Grief Herkulesblick, and Mink Wittfeld

I don't think you need to join your post to that thread...I'm pretty sure you'll get opinions posted to this over the next few days. I just wanted to be sure you'd seen the opinions that had been voiced there regarding how to use Tom's influences to their best advantage so you get what you're seeking in a pairing.

I did look over the proposed pedigree, and it's my opinion that of all of the ones you mention, it's Tom's traits that would come through the strongest, as he's closer up in the proposed lineage.  I don't feel the dogs linebred on in the 4th generations onward have much impact on the pups as those in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd generations.   Your female and this male complement each other well; I prefer her topline to his, but his shoulder to hers, and hopefully the offspring from such a pairing will see improvement in both areas.  I notice the owner of the male describes him as having a 'strong' personality, and I know what my understanding of it is, but I don't know what she means by that term--for example, is he pushy but social with people and other dogs, or is he aloof  with others and dismissive of a handler whose personality isn't equally as strong?

And finally, there's the question of what you are seeking to produce with this litter--active companions, potential replacement breeding stock, sport dogs, law enforcement prospects, or???

bumping this up in hopes that some of the working line breeders will weigh in with their thoughts on this mating....

I guess I would have to ask what you would hope
to be adding to your bitch with this breeding? What
does this male offer to compensate/compliment her?

by klcabe on 26 August 2012 - 16:08

I'm looking to bring in a little more aloofness, for one. Naccia is >extremely< social and friendly with everyone. Not that it's a horrible thing, but she will literally go out of her way to get someone to pet her, which can be annoying. lol

She has bone crushing grips as it is, so that would be something that Charik should compliment her on. She's also a good tracker. Her obedience is good, but not super flashy (which could be a training issue).

From what his owner says, Charik is easy to train, and biddable. Naccia loves to work, but can be stubborn/bullheaded sometimes.

Like hexe noted, I feel that their structures compliment each other well, and pigment should be nice, too.

I like the breeding I have a male 3-3 on Tom over the top prey ( I don't think that is a bad thing)
You will bring in good defence with Mink ( a little Mink goes a long way)
It to me is a nice combination and will produce balance dog /drives

by joanro on 27 August 2012 - 02:08

I don't think this would produce balanced dogs and I stand by my original response to the inquiry for the mating..... not a good idea.( in other, clearer words, no).

by hexe on 27 August 2012 - 06:08

joanro, do you believe the progeny of such a pairing would be too much for the average active pet home, too much drive, more specifically too much prey, given that more puppies are usually placed in homes that are primarily looking for a companion and not a sport dog?

Charik's been described as having a 'strong' personality--and that term can have different meanings to different people. So I'm curious--is he pushy but social with people and other dogs, or is he aloof with others and dismissive of a handler whose personality isn't equally as strong?

I guess it doesn't really much matter what anyone else thinks of the pairing if the owner of the stud dog declines the request for service...and it is just as important for a stud owner to be cautious about what bitches they accept as it is for a bitch owner to be choosy about a stud dog--both animals can be absolutely outstanding specimens, yet not be the right pairing with one another for various reasons.  It's shouldn't be viewed as disrespect to either dog in such instances.
