Hello,

I have been having a little issue with Prince over the last week and a half..It started with what appeared to be the fibers from his tennis balls sticking to his lower lips > jowls<....

Upon closer examination it appears to be scabbing. I have been cleaning with 1 part peroxide 5 parts water and applying coconut oil to keep them moisturized. It is helping some, but is not completely gone...

It does not seem to bother him and I have checked his mouth and have found no other issues..There is no foul odor coming from his mouth and there have been changes in food ect,...

The only thing I can add is that when I cleanse the area with the warm water and above solution I feel a bit of a clear, slimy residue....

I have a call into the vet. I am hoping to can get some advice without need for an appt. Prince is usually muzzled for appointments and having to have a mouth examination will be not be fun,,I am really hoping to avoid that scenario if possible..

I googled the symtoms and have heard that a product called Penaten Cream has been used with good results,,It's not available in the states though,,...The main ingredient is 18% Zinc Oxide. I hate to appy zinc to his lips and have him lick it..

Has anyone had this condition??..
Any suggestion would be appreciated...Thanks..

Zinc Oxide? That is what they put on the nose of Lifeguards! My son got swimmers rash which turns out is really a parasite, and we used the zinc oxide and it helped him, believe it or not, but only as a matter of comfort. Not sure about what happens if you ingest zinc oxide, though? Good luck, I know it hasn't been easy for Prince.

Cheap tennis balls can harm dog's teeth, and possibly the gums/lips as well. The fibers are abrasive. I'd get rid of the tennis balls, as they are also a choking hazard for dogs the size of a GSD.

  I agree with SUNSILVER

GO to walmart and buy the ball with the light in it...HE will not destroy it and you can see it at night.

also the Kong people make wonderful balls..

they are not soft and cushiony but the are wonderful and the KONG for Water is softer and he can gum it a bit.. The one shown below is the regular kong made for GANDER MOUNTAIN in orange with a rope...the Water Kong is blue or use to be...I use this one now...

BUT take them up after playing with them...MY dogs love the KONG for Water..IT also has the rope which I LOVE because I can throw it better

IT hangs up in the trees too....so BEWARE>>>>YOU may have to get a ladder or climb a tree..lol

Keith,,Thanks for the link!..Your right,,it appears to be lip fold pyoderma,,

Sunsilver and YR,,Thanks for the advice,,The tennis balls Prince plays with are the oversized type, but I still threw it away. I think those fibers might have contributed to the irritation of his condition,,

Bee,,,I know , right!...

Joss used to get some occasional crusting on his lip folds. I pricked a Vit E gelcap and squeezed a bit on the irritated folds. It worked well :)

Sounds like lip fold dermatitis. An Rx called Synotic worked for my dog.
