Hello all,

I have a few  questions in regards to outdoor kennel setup, in particular: the floor type, dog house bedding, and dog house flap door.

Please note that I have already setup the external kennel in a shape of the letter "L". The overall size (looking at the construction of letter "L") is "|" = 4.5ft X 20ft, and "_" size = 8ft X 6ft
The "|" area is concrete flooring and in that area I placed the insulated dog house.
The ""_" area is/was grass which has now lost all the grass and is turning into dirt.

It is obvious that my dog is eliminating in the grassy area sometimes when he is kennelled.

My questions are:
  • What type of flooring would you suggest I use for the area that is turning into dirt? Please consider that my dog is now and then eliminating in this area - so it should be easy for cleanup.
  • What type of dog house bedding do you suggest I use for the upcoming winter and why? (Straw, cedar shredding, etc...?)
  • What type of a dog house flap door would you suggest for me to use? I know that some people are using parts of carpet as a flap door but I'm not sure how would that be attached to the dog house - examples would be welcomed.
I hope that you have understood my questions and problem descriptions above.
All constructive suggestions are welcomed.
Thank you.

Lime layer on dirt, 4" chipped rock base and 18"x18" concrete on top.

Urine will go throught the cracks in between concrete blocks and poop will be easy to clean solids off of.

I'm in the process of building some new kennels. I have used all kinds of containment over the years and have changed my mind as to what works best for me. The kennels I have now are 8'x14'. They are 2"x4" welded galv. horse panels with concrete floor graded 1/8" per foot for cleaning. Metal roofing graded 1/8" per foot. and they do not work good for me.

The kennels I'm tearing down and on the cement slab. I am building a wooden structure building, insulated, vents and swamp cooler, 2 windows 2'x3'. high on the north wall. Inside will be 6'x6' holding kennel.with inside gates and guilatine doors out of 1/4" steel plate doors that are on 1/8" cable for lifting and closing. they will open and hook to stay open or unhook from out side of kennel to close door. There is a 8' walkway for crates, feed etc. The doors open up to 6'x 18' covered runs with a 12" cement foundation for outside runs. 12" deep will have hog wire covered with dirt. 3" 0f pea gravel on top. No concrete in outside runs.

Off the building will be a 40'x20' fenced area to let dogs out while cleaning kennels 1 or 2 dogs at a time.

The reason is cleaner, noise, easier to clean, safer. This way a person can clean everything, water, feed and never be in contact with dogs. Since all my dogs will definitely bite a stranger it is hard and expensive to get someone to care for them if me and my wife are gone at the same time.

I have used straw, cedar shavings, and soft wood shavings. cedar is junk as it is harder to clean up and it don't break down. Straw is usually the same as far as clean up. The best I have used is just fir shavings.

I'm getting rid of dog houses and building beds off the ground inside the building. 1" pipe frame with hopefully heavy canvas cover if it works

outside big runs I have good sand, it drains well, it is never muddy when it rains and you can clean up well. Also once in a while you can add more sand etc.
all the dogs have a wooden "chalet" to go in when it rains etc. in the winter you can add some straw in the doghouse to keep the dog warm.

My indoor/outdoor kennels are concrete floor inside and outside to clean well with pressure washer. Concrete floor has infloor heating for winter and dogs have plastic mat to sleep on, it works well and they don't chew this and it is easy to clean!

dog doors for indoor/outdoor kennel I used this heavy duty dog door, it works well, will keep cold air out in the winter
and keep cool in the summer.
