I'm not one to jump on big marketing bandwagons, but I have to say, my doctor has a machine that alkalizes water and he gave (read: gave...as in, no money earned) me some gallons of it to try and see what I thought. Someone was trying to get him to distribute the machines and he was testing to see if they were as effective as they were made out to be. To be totally honest, I hate water, hate hate hate it. NEVER drink plain water. This stuff was actually really good-tasting (even super-skeptic bf agreed it was different, and he likes water) and as much as I wanted to say "nope, just plain old water and I still feel like crap," I had to admit that after only about 5 days drinking it every day I felt a LOT better. So much so, in fact, that I'm thinking of buying the crazy-expensive machine and giving this water to all my animals.

YR....you are onpoint and it does transfer to our dogs. I did a diet change like that a year ago pending back surgery......one year later and 22 lbs lighter I am catching dogs again and much more endurance.

No, dogs with allergies, food or inhalation, should not be used for breeding. They are immune cripples that will pass that fault on to their progeny.

When I lived  in Czech I have never heard of anybody having  allergies except  there was a girl that had allergy to strawberries. It was so unusual ( for anybody to have alergy) that I still remember it.
When I got to USA I have realized that many if not most people have some kind of a allergy here. That does not look  like  a genetic problem, but like an environmental problem .
Czech dogs in Czech, same thing, I have never heard of them having allergy. When I got to USA I realized that many dogs have allergy,...even some Czech dogs are reported having it.
Would I breed such dog. Absolutely Not. Is it genetic? Well after  all everything is genetic. Even common cold and if or where someone brakes his arm.
However to me it seems that some environmental condition may be causing it by tripping the gene to react that way. I do not know and am rather safe then sorry and I want dogs who can resist to it as much as possible. That is until I know 100% what actually triggers the genes to cause such allergy.

Allergic to strawberries?!  That's terrible! I love strawberries.
 to everything you said, Prager.

Jenni, I'm not sure if I've ever heard of alkalized water, or if I had then I've forgotten.  I'll have to see where I can find it here locally, would be very interested in trying it.

My mom and her husband are Monavie people, I have to say I can be a real hardcore skeptic when it comes to any manufactured product that is claimed to have all kinds of health benefits (because I swear they used me as a guinea pig for a million of those kinds of things when I was growing up) but I admit that I do feel better when I drink those Monavie shots.
YR, I'll ask my mother if they've heard of or tried anything from the company that your daughter reps.

Good posts euroshepherd.  My vet said that they see more allergies in dogs now than ever before.  Allergies are on the rise in dogs and humans.  Studies are currently being conducted and there is more than one theory as to why this is happening.  The two most popular theories are global warming and the "hygiene hypothesis"  (http://health.usnews.com/health-news/family-health/allergy-and-asthma/articles/2010/11/13/antibody-linked-to-allergies-on-the-rise and http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/43195145/ns/today-today_health/t/your-allergies-really-are-getting-worse-new-study-shows/).  Of course these studies have to do with humans, but it makes sense that the same may apply to dogs.  I found this interesting article which applies to dogs:  http://www.ashgi.org/articles/immune_rising_storm.htm.

 Jenn:

I have drops I put in every drink I take except my water..unless I have no lemons available..Lemons are Alkaline after they get into the body..

I have what is called Ion Booster in drops #1  6 drops first..then  add 6 drops of #2 which is called PH booster....

If you watch your dogs and the way they react during their days of puppy hood and see them eating rocks,,eating weeds, grass and sometimes throwing up yellow bile...????

INDIGESTION:  they have high acid count too...ALKALINE is how you keep your dogs body working too. THIS IS why I have loudly said..DONOT let dogs drink city water with chlorine and all the floride and garbage added to water from a faucet.. If you have to filter their water again in a filtering system or osmoses which is safer for us and our dogs..

THE corn and all the excess baggage dog food companies throw in a PROCESSED dog food are acidic. ANY food processed or distilled or pasturized is ACIDIC>>

SO it is up to us to figure it out and try to keep our dogs diets on the alkaline side..

Today is the day for all of us to think better, eat better and get the body back to a healthy state. IT is not a secret it is very much talked about..

WHY let pharmacutical companiies and DOCTORS earn billions of dollars telling us to take poisen statins in our bodies when most of our problems can be corrected with food and herbs and natural things that are positive cures.  JUST search for the truth..MANY drs are turning to Intelligent ways for better health and health bodies.. LISTEN to DR> OZ>   he is not a clown he is a Heart Dr and he is on the right path for Americans to get rid of the horrible health problems we have starting with FAT..

DOGS have same problems only their chemistry is slightly different..THEY like real meat not processed..LOOK out grasshoppers , lizards, and anything breathing...on legs moving and not able to get out of the reach.

Many dogs eat bugs, and cats are famous for a lizard hanging out of their mouths. My chelsi ate a grasshopper yesterday and my dogs eat june bugs every spring...JUST more protein..lol

I agree Prager with your post.....the first Czech dogs I got over ten years ago had cast iron stomachs and health constitution. I think environment and diet can eventually become genetic in bringing out recessives from dormancy.

by Blitzen on 10 July 2012 - 19:07

There is also a theory that annual vacs may be at fault for so many allergies in dogs. I worked as a tech in the mid 70's to the late 80's and we saw plenty of dogs with allergies, mostly toy breeds. They weren't as common in larger breeds at that time.
