Have you ever thought that just based on a Bark, how we can tell (without seeing) which dog is either giving a succession of barking, or just a couple of barks, or even one bark?
Perhaps we even take it for granted, that although a bark is a bark, it distinguishes between dogs - and we know their individual voice!

Yup, I even know what "kind" of bark it is. I want out is bark is different from the SQUIRREL bark. A stranger is here sounds very different than daddies home!. Ironically I had two full sisters here and I could tell who was barking by the sequence of barks. Even though the bark itself sounded identical. ( think syntax)

All of mine are easily distinguished by their bark. And what's on their minds is also easy to decipher. Sometimes, though, when they are bored & want attention, the girls, especially Ansgar, will try to 'mock' the human conversation she hears. If she hears "Oh, I think I want a cup of coffee," she will respond with 'Bark, woo bark yip yip ahh arf-fee.' It's hysterical, & results in my 'feeding' her line after line to mimic. She doesn't do that to Carl, so maybe she is truly mocking me, but it's funny. Lil' Bit will join in eventually, & of course then so must Beckett. Then they must all platz & hush! or we humans would go deaf.

My late husband used to take his Volvo to a repair shop in Aurora. The guy who owned it would let us bring our GSD into his office. He was sitting in his office chair, looking up a part for the car, and Tasha (the dog in my sig) came over and gave him a sniff.
"What do you want, Tasha?" he asked. "Too bad you can't talk. You know, I can speak dog..." He then gave a series of barks and yips.
Tasha looked him right in the eye, and gave a low growl. He backed off, and lifted the parts binder so it was between him and our girl.
Roger and I were both killing ourselves laughing.
"I guess she doesn't like your accent, Jim!" I said.
"What do you want, Tasha?" he asked. "Too bad you can't talk. You know, I can speak dog..." He then gave a series of barks and yips.

Yes, the bark tells it all. I am even learning to tell what is wanted from the puppies by their bark (I want to play with mom, I'm hungry, there is a cat).
Rose talks too. She rarely barks, but she makes all sorts of other sounds. I swear even one of them sound like "no." (I get this when it is time to come in from playing).

Sunsilver, LOL! Ansgar woke me up at 3:45am this morning, shortly after I had finally gotten to sleep, 'talking' in a quiet series of whines, yips, & moans, asking could she sleep with us? Dang dogs, it's getting rediculous! jackie harris
