Hello,

I just joined this site and I hope to get some help about my GS puppy.  Basically I have the same situation as Matt’s puppy, only my guy is almost 7 months old and his stool was never solid but I was always able to pick it up.  Now it has been two days since this is happening (he goes 3-4 times at night and then some more throughout the day) and it is very loose.

I have been to the vet, who did several tests and said everything was good.  He also suggested that I should change his food, and so I did.  I am now feeding him “Advantage” (Blue Buffalo is a bit too expensive for me right now) which is also “natural”.  I tried to do the 75/25 technique for a week and then 50/50.  Now it’s been a week of the new food only.  Everything was OK until 2 days ago.  I am confused and concerned and feel like going to the vet will not solve anything since I’ve been there twice already.

I should also mention that whenever my puppy eats human food, anything at all, his stool is always solid.  My vet told me that I should not get him used to our food since it can be bad for him in the long run.
So now I am really confused.  Please help!

Thank you,

Aly

Well you can cook your dog's food.... I did it for years in Europe, we had only Pedigree back then and my dog would maybe piss on it, never eat it. I should have some recipes if you want them. Easy and I did a batch for 4-5 days. And not too expensive either. You can also do raw...

I am not a vet so I can take guesses but what about EPI, also did you try to put digestive enzyme on your dog's food and see what it does? There could be many reasons.

Both of my dogs had the same issue (at different times) and it ended up with one being allergic to chicken and the other to sweet potato.
If you feed them rice and ground beef for a day or two and the stool goes back to normal then  you can start adding things back into their diet one at a time to figure out what it is. Alternatly after feeding the rice / beef you can go to the pet store and find a limited ingredient dog food. I would suggest trying something with a novel protein (duck , lamb , herring / salmon ) and see how it goes. I ended up using Go! Salmon but I had some luck with California Natural's also.

It could be totally non-food related like giardia or some bacterial infection.  I typically try to keep some metronidazole around when I have puppies to give them when they get the runs.  Usually clears it up pretty quickly.

AlyM,

As I understood from your post - your pup have no issue on human food.

Don't listen to your vet regarding the 'human food' being bad for your dog - your dog's #2 tells you that your vet is wrong. The issue is with a dog food (kibble) you are feeding him. Did you buy this food (by any chance) from the vet?

GSDs are known to have issues with their stomachs when fed kibble. You often need to supply digestive enzymes, as GSDPack already mentioned. Try different brand (maybe even cheaper one that has more cement in it to firm up his stools), but if you would be willing to prepare the food for your own pup with 'human grade' ingredients - you will have better and quicker results and you will save a bundle in vet visits, supplements, enzymes, coat and skin conditioners, grooming, etc. during the life of your dog.

Your pup is already telling you that 'human food' makes him healthy, kibble gives him runs...

what food are or were you feeding?

i have a dog with major alleries, i have to pay big money to find a food with very limited ingredients, i found Acana Duck and pear, its very limited.

there are  other foods but this one is very limited, i tryed Go duck , but it had flaxseeds so the  allergies were back.

this dog cant have much protein  except for duck, rabbit, vension and kangroo, and can have oats potatoes and rice , most else is  bad.

it does sound like a food problem, if human food is fine.

if it is food allergies , its going to be hard to find any thing cheap, homemade may be  cheaper.

My german shepherd pup started with the really loose stools around 7 months too.  she was always ravenously hungry and gaining no weight.  Here is a link to my story on the  total german shepherds website and maybe it will help both you and your vet discover what is wrong.  Hopefully you can rule out epi and find the right diet.
