Cavalier K9

by Cavalier K9 on 29 June 2012 - 02:06

Hello,

I have a new client that called me today saying that their 1 1/2 neutered male GSD is showing aggression. They said it started about a month ago. It is starting to act stand offish and even snook up behind one of their friends and nipped him and ran off when the guy turned around barking with his hair raised. They said before this their dog was pretty social and never had any aggression. I'm wondering if this is something that could be genetic. They said that the parents showed some of the same behaviors when they went to meet them and to pick a puppy. (The male came up from behind them and bit the wife in the back of the leg, tore pants but not skin). They said the problem is slowly escalating. I will be going to meet the dog next week. Just wanted to get your thoughts. I know they spent $5000.00 on this dog when it was 8wks old. (pretty high to me for a puppy). What are your thoughts?

The breeder is: http://www.vonhaushansgermanshepherds.com/Puppies.html

The parents are Volvo vom Elzmundungsraum x Dona vom Angelbaum

Unbelievable!!

Why would anyone pay that for a puppy and see the parent  dam behave that way and go thru with the sale???
Are you sure they paid that price???

I am not believing this one?

 DID I miss something?

I think the breeder is one hell of a saleswomen and the buyer is a MORON.
You pay $5k for a puppy whos parents sneak up and bite you in the ass and then you're SURPRISED when the puppy does the same thing 18 months later?

I do not know the breeders nor do I know anything about the pedigrees.  I didn't even view the link.  However,  just from reading the post, I have the same thoughts as YR.  Why would anyone pay that kind of money for an 8 wk old puppy, after seeing the parent do what it did.  Unless of course it was a total novice that was taken advantage of.  JMO

I'm shocked that that breeder was able to get someone to buy a puppy for $5k, especially considering the messy, hard to read, obnoxiously loud website.

As far as the 18 month old male...could be one of several things.
He's a teenager feeling his oats (even if he doesn't have nuts)
It's a genetic aggression issue (kind of like how many chowchows become antisocial at adulthood)
or possibly a genetic mental/emotional health problem (like schizoprenia that usually emerges in early adulthood)
or......?  plenty of possibilities in this case.

These are VERY novice people. The wife wasn't comfortable purchasing this puppy but her husband told her that this is what he wanted and that he knew what he was doing. The wife told me that she wanted a family pet but the husband wanted to get the wife a dog that would "protect" her because he is militarty and deployed a lot. I guess the husband viewed the female as "protecting" her home....I agree the $5000 is insane and the website gave me a headache when reading through it!

LOL, PT Barnum would love these people!

Makes me think of some clients we have right now. They adopted some sort of beagle/pug/lab type mix from the shelter. The dog spends full time escaping over/under fences, bolting out the door, that type of thing. One day while chatting with them they told me the reason they picked him from the group of dogs in the room. It was because he pretty much ignored them and especially didn't pay any attention to their 3yo son!
And now they want to know why the dog is so hard to connect with and train!
SERIOUSLY PEOPLE!

why in the world would some one pay 5K for a puppy from only 1 title parent , let alone pay  that kind of money on a puppy, the person has not to know much about what they are worth as that is way over priced. the problem could be  genertic or maybe he is a fear biter as socializing seem to no be the problem. some of the show lines have very weak nerves. i dont know this breeder and really would never buy from  them , they talk pretty big and expect to be paid for it. i dont know about everyone else but if i dog bite me ,i would walked away. not good in temp at all.

I will know a lot more once I go evaluate the dog next week. This lady was referred to me by a good friend of mine so I really want to be able to help them. I could tell by talking to her that she is very stressed and this is her first GSD and of course at this time her husband is out to sea. She has only had labs in the past and is very lost at this point...By the sounds of it her husband got the dog becuase its a "manly" and "tough" breed. :-/

My neutered male showed the same behavior and has done this to 2 people. Both times it was out of a "protective instinct", both times around me. This male (Axl) had been nervous since he was a young pup. He was scared of many things and it took a lot of work to desensitize him. He never had agression issues as he was younger, but the older he became (and this was around the same age) the more he grew a false confidence. He makes a good guard dog as he is so wary of everything. But in both incidences there was no true reason for him to become protective. His attacks were basically dirty, avoiding a direct confrontation because of lack of confidence; a fear nipper. "I let you know first..."
