...........For the last year or so, I have been researching several important factors about RAW versus PRECESSED KIBBLE. I have switched my dogs from the PROCESSED KIBBLE dog food and have gone to the RAW form. I have noticed several changes in my dogs. Their coats are shinier, fuller and don't smell, color change from light and bristle to dark and soft, skin is not flaky and dry, eyes are clear, bright and sparkle, most importantly and very noticeable is the energy level has increased, stools are more formed and not constipated looking. I'm a firm believer that raw is far better and healthier and not to mention beneficial to my dogs. When I switched from processed to raw, one of the things I noticed was that there stools were black, this is the toxins from the processed kibble coming out of there systems. My dogs now have several bowel movements a day as they should when they eat. The same works for us humans, if your healthy and your digestive system is working properly, we should be having 3 to 4 bm's a day. I have a couple of  points on this issue. WHAT IS PROCESSED KIBBLE? ........some of you may be shocked with the facts. Kibble is made from flour, oats, wheat, corn, whey, yeast, rotten chicken, infected chicken, infected cattle, infected lamb, infected horses, animals with cancer tumours, plastic, manure, rotten fish,melamine...............this is for making plastic, remember the dog scare. Please think about this next fact......the thought of all the animals that are tested is sickening............oh and by the way, I'm not talking about eating the  processed food, no, no, I'm talking about testing an animal by which these companies cut muscle off the back flank of a dog or cat without sedating them, without giving pain medications, without any after care, thrown back into there cold cement floors, hurting, crying and eventually.......dying.  Not to get into the saddest aspects of the dog food industry, but do ask yourself this!  When have you ever seen or known of a dog or a cat to be eating wheat and barley and grains????? I mean REALLY, dogs and cats are carnivorous. And why, would any one support an industry that is killing the very things we love?  I was very fortunate to have cross paths with a animal lover who makes her own raw dog food. There are several out there. I trust the raw form I'm feeding my dogs, because she trial tested it, had a top nutritionist test it......and most importantly, when I asked if she would eat it, she responded with a yes without hesitation. I decided to try it, so I made a buffalo slider........it was absolutely fantastic. And if your asking about the possibility of salmonella, its possible, but there has not been an incident of an out break that I'm aware of. Cleaning of your dogs dishes is crucial. I suggest stainless steal. this is a non pores material. There are several companies out there. I suggest you research them. Trial testing is important. Where are the ingredients coming from? I get my raw food from Common Sense Dog Food in Langley ,BC. I have tried others and non compare, This is a individual that had gone the extra mile in research, testing, knowing where her beef, buffalo and chicken are coming from. Check out her site at Common Sense. If you want the best for your dogs, cats and any other critters, stop feeding  processed........they will love you for it. There are several books that have studied  these facts and I suggest you read them. FOOD PETS DIE FOR, by ANN N. MARTIN.  SHOCK TO THE SYSTEM, by CATHERINE O'DRISCOLL. Also by CATHERINE is a book on Vaccines and a must read. Knowledge is power........also, many vets are switching to raw instead if the processed kibble.

There have been many discusions on here regarding Raw vs kibble and it is quite a controversial subject. Like you, I am convinced raw is the way to go because I also saw positive changes in my dogs when I switched. I agree with everything you said, but not everyone here will.

I agree whole heartedly...and my vet is having to agree, my girl is one awesomely healthy dog.  He worries about salmonella and tells me to watch for it because it is a horrible ordeal from which the dog may not recover.  Cleanliness is vital!

I would love to do raw but i just cannot stomach it.  the next best thing is a crock pot and organ meats. Cooked all day with low fat low sodium campbells chicken broth add carrots and green beans and blueberries and sweet potato mixed with back to basics grain free soaked kibble has my girl healthy happy and fine. I add a B12 vitamin, vitamin E and a wild salmon oil capsule every day.

I am with you on the raw.  Our 7 mo on a completely raw diet and or 8 wk old get mostly raw. I do believe there are some decent kibble products out there, but at $80 per bag, I actually think it might be cheaper to go raw.  Our 7 mo old has some environmental allergies and I noticed a big improvement over the last week or so, on a completely raw diet.  He's had whole mackerel, whole rabbit, green tripe and everything else I can find at the ethic store.

Raw feeders here for the last 26 years :)  Great results.  Not a whole lot of vet bills either, other than the maintenance stuff.

Raw Dog food requires room for freezing and refrigeration. It is a lot of work if fully prepared at home.  You feed your animal 'human grade' meat - no unidentifiable 'ingredients', chemicals or preservatives, etc. Surprisingly it can be way cheaper than feeding your dog a high quality kibble (my dog food bill is below $1/lb). Feeding with commercial raw dog food is as simple as kibble, plop the putty in the bowl and you are done... but it is expensive.

vs.

Processed kibble is convenient, doesn't spoil and doesn't require any work. You can keep it in garage for years. You can buy it very cheap on sale or if the price is reduces for a quick sale.  According to the producers it is everything your dog needs to be happy. Contains many 'ingredients' http://www.bornfreeusa.org/facts.php?more=1&p=359

Main reason for me why I don't feed my dogs with kibble (not even mention the health reasons):

I am a big supporter of feeding raw, but have to disagree with your last point. I do not see many vets that are proponents of raw, and have heard some crazy reasons that they do not support it. From worries of salmonella to the fact that dogs have "evolved to eat kibble."

by HighDesertGSD on 29 June 2012 - 18:06

I think feeding raw is more natural and can well be better most of the time. but a few deaths from germ contamination is natural also.
