What are the various airlines charging now days to fly your dog as "checked in baggage" when you are flying with it in the lower 48 states ..... #500 size crate .......most recent experiences plz ! ............ Thx ! Greg

I flew a bunch of dogs around with me this year..
It varied depending on the airline/destination/time of year/weather/size of plane.
Frontier was the best, at 150, size didn't matter.
American was more, at 175.
You have to check and double check several times to make sure that all legs of the flight have a big enough cargo hold for the 500.
Also that there are no embargoes for heat this time of year.
Some of the other airlines were more (200 each way) but dont fly them anymore/dont take pets in summer/dont take certain breeds, etc...
I think Alaska air was a good one too.. but didn't fly where I needed to go.
Frontier didn't require the health certificate either.. but American did.
Remember when it was $25 to check the dog??

Many airlines have stopped checking dogs as baggage for the summer.
United/Continental has processes in place so the animals do not overheat and are allowed to ship all summer. You will pay extra for this.....
Many airlines require a crate large enough so that there's 1 inch clearance from tip of ears to top of crate......be careful about this.

Just flew both our dogs and a cat on United/Continental. Not sure of the # size of our crates, but they were a Small, an X-Large, and a Giant. Total cost was $1300 for all three pets.

Yes! We had the 'Giant' size for the GSD just because of her ears. I thought about trying to put her in the XLarge (which she fit very comfortably into, but when she sits up nice and tall the ears touched), but am glad I didn't. The guy weighing the crate with the GSD in it said that there had been someone earlier that day who had a pet in a crate that was too small and couldn't fly.

last month I shipped a fullgrown female the dog and crate combined weighted 100lbs the cost was about $500 thru continental/united
she was not flying with me..but was booked as live cargo.

Sitasmom, what size crate did you use to fly the adult female?
