Hi all, I need some suggestions I can pass along to a new puppy owner.

One of Rose's puppies is going to their new home on Saturday (going to be a ranch dog; so proud).  The new owner will be traveling about 9 - 11 hours.  What suggestions can I pass along to them for the puppy?

1.  Puppy cannot get on any ground for pit stops (only had 1 set of shots)
2.  Puppy cannot go 9 hours without eating
3.  Lol, keeping an 8 week old puppy calm, cool, and collected in a car for 9 - 11 hours.   Yeah right.  I do not even do that.

First, why can't a nine wk old pup go nine hrs without eating? Next, if they insist on letting pup out of crate during trip, set x-pen up on a tarp they bring from home to keep pup off ground. Can spread pine shavings down for pup to eliminate in. Offer h2o during pit stop. Pup wil whine or squall if it wants to. Hold in lap to make it happy:) p.s. Bring lots of paper towels;)

Joanro, probably to lessen the chance for this:

Be prepared for a bout of diarrhea. Bring paper towels and disinfecting wipes or spray bottle, plastic bags.

eating thing - 9 hours without eating - Won't this cause a deep drop in energy for a 8 week old puppy?  I thought this is a bad thing at this age for a puppy.  If the owner leaves early in the morning and does not feed the puppy before leaving....that is say 24 hours without food.  Isn't that a very bad thing?  I have some probotics that I can send with the owner to add to the puppy's food during travel.

Tarp / shavings, great suggestions.  I will pass along.

Crate - I will suggest this, but I do not think they will have a crate with them.  I have a "new puppy" box, but it is not big enough for anything short of sleeping in a "down" position.

I was going to send a couple of puppy pads and some news papers with the new owner.  I will include one of the old puppy towels I have been using and suggest lots of paper towels.

If you haven't done so, I would suggest spending the next couple of days taking the pup for car rides, other wise the new owners are going to be dealing with car sickness for 9 hours on their ride home (this may still be the case even if you take the pup for a couple of rides). Feed the pup 3 or 4 hours before it's going to leave and again when it gets home and it will be fine.

There isn't any reason why you can't let a pup out to go to the washroom during the trip, unless the pup is sick or has a weak immune system. Stop every couple of hours, give the pup some water and don't leave until the pup releaves it's self. I would avoid rest stop or any other place other dogs frequent. I have travelled on a several occasions for 6-8 hours with pups ranging from 8-20 weeks old in a crate without any problems or accidents other then a little barf.

Ok.  We have done a number of car rides over the last 8 weeks, going to the vets.  We did a trip last week to Dallas, about a 2 1/2 drive.

Feeding schedule sounds good.  I will pass that along too.

thanks

Beetree : what are you responding to?

by beetree on 07 June 2012 - 20:06

Joanro,

Oh, well, when my DH picked up our rescue pup it was a 10 1/2 hr drive. And the pup had a touch of the runs is all!  Thinking maybe less food in the belly, the less the chance of something coming out the other end?  Not that this is what fawndallas' pups will do. I'm just sayin', being prepared, is a good thing.

That was my thought to....that is why I have never feed my dogs before going on any trips.   As all of you are more familiar as breeders, I am trying to get good advise to pass along.
