Elbows are normal; I can post the x-rays if anyone want to see them.  Here are the hips:

Opinions?

I'm guessing Fair, Good depending on if the OFA reps are having a good day.  They're kinda shallow.

How old? Best guess OFA good, SV A1.

I sort of agree with you, CMills; I don't think they're necessarily shallow but based on this x-ray, I see one good hip and one fair one although if you look closely, the rotation of the two legs is slightly different...better in the left (right side of the picture...the one I would grade as good).  Like you said...depends on how their day is going as to whether he gets a fair or good rating overall but it's nice to know that we're not looking forward to any clinical manifestations of truly bad hips.

He's just over 30 months, Blitzen, and I do nothing to protect or preserve my pups' hips.  They are free to run, jump, chase balls and be freaks to their hearts' content...Axel proved it today by trying to jump onto the 4 foot tall counter at the vet's office this morning...and he'd have made it if I hadn't had him on a short leash.  True hip dysplasia is genetic...it can be exacerbated by environmental factors but they can't cause it.  I've been biking this dog for a year and he moves like a train.  I agree he'll go good...or fair...by the OFA, which translates to normal by the SV.

Correct Keith. I agree in your last paragraph, we live on a farm and our dogs get free rein to run/play as well, and I haven't seen any environmental issues in mine.  Let us know how he scores!

I certainly will...good, bad or indifferent, the OFA database only works if we are all willing to publish our results, whatever they may be.

At 30 months I'll be surprised if he get anything less that good, but it's hard to second guess OFA. In fact I thought about saying good to excellent after you told us his age. I don't get hung up on ratings, normal is normal. The positioning is not quite perfect; if it were I think both sides would be equal with at least 1/2 of the head seated in the socket. Can't get much more normal for breed and age than that.

One of my OFA excellents was jumping out of his 6 foot high kennel at just over 4 months of age. He'd stand at the front, look up in the air, and over the top he'd go in one easy motion like he was on a pogo stick. Either they are dysplastic or they ain't.

I'd say Good.

I will wish for a good for you; BUT could possibly be fair.  Nan
