I visited a PSA type club...interestingly almost every dog had an electric collar. Is that normal these days.
Secondly, what must one consider before training a dog in personal protection. What are the downsides ?.

Ecollar- yes, that is normal. Protection training- totally dependent on trainer (and dog). --Mary

Not really,

An E-collar is a valuable tool, if used correctly, fairly and consistently.

It should never be used to circumvent basic foundation work!

And it should never be used by an inexperienced handler/trainer.

Before training a dog in personal protection there are many things to consider; your lifestyle, children (yours if any, and their friends that may visit your home) liability etc.

There are a lot of downsides if you are not prepared and experienced.

So any recommendations for a personal protection trainer in the NJ area. Everybody says do your research, apart from googling the guy, what else can be done.

do you already have a dog that is capable of becoming a personal protection dog , as 90% or more of todays breeding are sport breedings and lack ability to become PP dog

I bought a PP dog from a police training facility. You best think long and hard to be sure it's what you want. You will need a secure place to keep him when your not home (at work ) to ensure he won't get out. If you work outside your home the dog will need to be on lockdown. Also, they want to be with there person ALL the time. They go crazy in the kennel outside, they pace and keep looking for you all day. If your busy in the yard, cutting grass, he will cry nonstop and make you feel guilty for not spending 24/7 with him. It really is a big responsibility.

Worldwide Canine in Texas and USK9 Unlimited in Louisiana have great trained dogs. Both sell to police and the government. They have many PP dogs you can pick from to match your needs and personality. Good Luck

The Working dog community is very small and political.  Spend lots of time at the club before you get a dog watch the dog and decoy (bad guy) listen to people at the training site.  Make sure they are fair to the dog, i.e. the dog is not biting because he is being hurt.  Figure out the temperment you want in the dog.  They are all very different.
