Hello all, I am interested in donating one of my puppies to a police department. Do canine programs take donations? I did some research and I didn't find a lot of help. Can anyone here help? Thanks!

I believe it varies from department to department.

What sort of resources and budget they have and what age you are talking about.

It is my understanding that most departments like to take on green dogs who can be tested a little more rigerously than a puppy as a better idea of the dog's capabilities can be discovered before a lot of time and or money is put into a puppy who may or may not be up to the work.

Hello,

we donate 4-5 K-9's each year.  However, like the previous poster said.... with puppies it is always a waiting game.  You never know if they will work out. Why don't you raise the puppy up, do lots of exposure and imprinting and then donate it?

Thank you everyone. Should I just call my local canine handlers and chat with them? I'd be willing to keep a pup and train it until it can be evaluated for police work. Thanks for everyone's help. Erin

I know my local PD only takes dog that are between 14 months and 3 years old. OFA good or better, and full teeth and show high ball drive and working ability. But they are working in hard, hot conditions (central florida) and they do not have a big budget to work with dogs that may wash out.
You may have to hold on to that dog for a while before they are of age to be offerd as service dogs. But the fact that you are even considering offering a dog is wonderful.
Hope everythign works out for the best.

Have you checked out dogs4cops? Someone I know donated a pup this year and has been happy with the communication. Supposedly, if the puppy does not work out it comes back to the breeder, but not sure how true this is. I as thinking of donating one, myself ...
