Hmm Search work? - Page 1

I have 90% made my choice of my litter for my personal dog (not service, i have that). He is going to be far more active than Rose and smart as a whip. I know I am not into any bite work training. ---------------------------------- Search work looks interesting. What qualities do I look for in a pup to know if he would be good and enjoy something like this? I know search training is something I have no idea about and I would do best to find a trainer to mentor and show me. ------------------ I am not expecting show or completion quality; I just want to try something fun and different. I enjoy training dogs and I am looking into different things. This would be purely for me and the dog.

I must advise you that SAR work requires thousands of hours of training for both you and your dog. Expenses are high and if and when you are deployable (may take years) you must be available to leave your home and family with no notice. Please remember or know sar is about the victim. Yes, we enjoy working with our dogs, but it is not to be undertaken lightly. It is not a sport like agility or fly ball.

Forgive me if I am wrong but didn't you breed your unregistered dog so that you could train her puppies as service dogs? As that was the original qualities you were looking for??

Sorry, I am not looking for an argument here but it seems to me you have had quite a turn around from your original reasons to breed your dog.

She never said she was training them all as service dogs. But that she hoped 2-5 would be suitable as service dogs. Not that we are beating a dead horse here or anything.

But she did say she would Offer training to all I the owners included in the purchase as she wants to gO into the training business, but she specified not all would be service dogs. Again not to beat a dead horse.

That is all true.  Time and energy, I have lots of that (much to my husband's dismay).  My personal moto is "sleep is for sissies and a waste of time."

Yes, this litter actually had 4 purposes. 
1.  Is for service dogs.  So far there are 2-3 that might make the 1st cut.  Time will only tell.
2.  A possible protection dog for my husband.  We will see though; I still have 3 weeks to decide on this project.  No matter what my husband says, I know it will be up to me for this dog.
3.  A 2nd dog for me, not as a service dog (again, I have that), but a dog I venture into some of the other great areas for this breed.  I am really just gathering public information now on what is out there (along with the reality checks).
4.  Start training for dogs.  IMO: The best way for this, especially where I live, is by word of mouth.  What better way than to offer a great GSD puppy which includes training?

Side note:  After asking some questions and looking at a couple of videos, I finally figured out what Rose (my service dog) was doing with the cats during down time.  She is parmeter herding them.  That now makes the whole scene that much funnier.  I wish I had a video camera. 

k9SAR you are depressing me! LOL

I SO want to do SAR with my puppy (her breeder does this with her dogs), if it shows any talent, but I think I will have to be happy with enjoying tracking training. As much as I want to do it, I have horses at home and leaving at the drop of a hat would be difficult.
I think I will still play around with the training and look into it, but I'm not holding out much hope of doing it "for real". It will be a fun activity to do with my dog anyway.

Anyway, fawndallas, if it's any consolation, tracking is a lot of fun and you can maybe take it another direction, like detection work?
