I personally don't think feeding a pup raw growing up will give it all the vitamins/minerals it needs to mature properly, but everyone has their own opinion. Large breed pups need so much nutrition to mature well. I think a good quality, balanced puppy food like Blue Buffalo, Wellness, or Orijen has more to offer a growing pup.

I was very impressed with the raw feeding program of Von Lotta GSD's; they seem to have it all covered as far as nutritional needs. etc/ YOu might check out their web site and read over the puppy feeding program. BOL Nan

I have raised two pups on raw, that said neither are old enough to x-ray yet. They're both just coming up on a year. Well ... one is all raw the other is kibble/raw.
Actually, that should be 3. We had a little Corgi that I raised on raw. Her breeder held back 2 pups who were on kibble and I thought the difference was amazing. Her pups matured at an alarmingly fast rate compared to my pup on raw. It was like night and day. This is what sparked me to prefer raw feeding for GSD pups. I think the slower growth rate is more ideal but this is all JMHO.

I have raised several on raw totally. No pup I have raised on raw, or any of the ones I have bred raised exclusively on raw have had anything but very nice xrays. Many are totally raw fed in their new homes as well. All raw fed pups xrayed clear but the one who hasn't xrayed yet. The only pup I am aware of from my breedings to ever have an unsatisfactory xray was kibble fed, but that's a very complicated case that cannot be "blamed" on kibble alone, though it was a very inappropriate kibble for a large breed puppy (ToTW adult).
CMills, really? You don't think nature accounted for a canine's nutritional needs when it designed them to be predators? How can any man-made cereal provide for better nutrition than the food nature intended?

My dog has only eaten raw since he was 8 weeks old.
We have no plans on breeding him so he'll probably never get Xrays.
He's on the 80/10/10 plan an is fabulous in every way.
He's 92 pounds at 22 months old.
I don't think we have anything to worry about concerning his diet.
We have one friend in particular who have been feeding RAW for over 20 years and she has been incredibly successful...

I raised couple of litters on raw, starting at 4 weeks with raw chicken wings + SureGrow100 (supplement). There was not a single problem with weaning - it took them only couple of licks to realize what it was and devour it... Pups loved raw and quickly weaned themselves. Puppies had daily access to bone knuckles for teeth and jaw development, and at least weekly to marrow bones.
Few owners switched their puppies to kibble. I have two puppies (male and female) in their 12 month fed with my raw/ homecooked formula and there is no comparison, both in looks and stamina. Both male and female never had any health issues, their coats are beautiful. They were growing at sturdy rate with no 'funny' growth spurts, growth pains, etc. The most evident difference is muscle development.
Both my litters have several OFA'd generations in their pedigrees and I had no hip issues reported by any of the owners. Pups are still too young to be OFA'd but I don't have any general health issues reported to me either. Only 'complaint' comes from those who switched their pups to kibble, they wish their pups had better appetites and that they weren't so slender and 'picky'... My pups devour any amount of food you give them in seconds licking bowl clean and checking everybody's else for something missed...

I would have more concerns about the pup's long term health feeding the commerical dog food.
From 2-4.5 months old, I fed grain-free "quality" kibble with some added meat/proteins and veggies. Then I got educated and transitioned to 100% raw, natural diet and have not fed a single morsel of kibble since. Pup is about 7 months now, doing great. While he seemed to thrive just fine on the kibble, I believe he was growing too fast. I've also kept him thin and active. He's always hungry, but my research dictiates this diet is likely for the best, especially in the early stage of bone and joint development.
A wealth of information on raw feeding and balanced recipes are out there.

When feeding RAW.......a BALLANCED RAW DIET is important.
Just throwing a handful of ground beef or a few chicken backs to your pup a couple of times daily will not give it what it needs.
Study and find out what nutrients are actually needed and in what ratios.....then proceed if you wish.

I agree to, how often do your dogs or pups get bone or meat with bones ???
supertanker
very nice how much bone a week you think?? we say here that pups should at least have 30% bone every meal in puppy stage
I have feed litle Goofey with raw since I got him home and he is now just turned 9 months old and thriving he is my first pup I have feed raw I have feed the adults for years on raw diet but I wanted to hear other opinions what you have done and the results you have gotten from their joints
Niesia

GK1
