Flipping through many websites I have seen prices that range from 500-9000 dollars.   I am trying to wrap my head around the pricing mechanism.

For example:

1-   If I am looking at a puppy whose grandparents are V1's and V2's and the asking price is 1400 dollars, is this a fair price?

2-   Sex and price, I know many people prefer male GSD over females, (for many reasons I will not go into because I don't want to derail my own thread) so does this also effect price?  If the breeder is charging 1400 for a male is it fair to reason that a female will fetch less do to decreased demand? If so, how much less?

If any breeder could shed some light on these questions I would appreciate it.

Thanks

I can't be of any real help, except to say that is it very plausible to find an exceptional puppy for $1200-$1500. In fact if I am not mistaken you could import a pup from Germany or Czech for barely more than that. The more expensive puppies are not necissarily any better, there are a ton of amazing breeders who sell at a flat rate regardless of gender and with full registration no questions asked. I have two dogs from different breeders. One good dog, one great dog and I paid $1200 Canadian for one and $1200 US for the other. Both with full registration. My girl is out of an SL import male and a WL AKC female, all dogs in the pedigree on both sides are SchH titled (most 2 and 3) and KKL.

Ace is correct a really nice pup can be had in the 12-1500 range.  Expect to pay up to 2500.00 for an exceptional show prospect.  Even the best of the best really shouldnt cost more than that.  An 8 week old pup is a crap shoot no matter how you look at it.  Even amazing bred to super amazing can and will produce duds.  It's the law of genetics. Paying more definately does not guarantee a quality puppy.  If you are looking at SL take a look at how many dogs in the pedigree are V rated and ask about their working ability.  If you are looking at WL look at the FEMALES in the pedigree, you want the bitches to be Sch 3 dogs as well as the males .  A young bitch may only have a Sch1 so not to big of a worry.   Bare minimum is hips and elbows clear.   Make sure at whatever price the dog is owned outright by you and steer clear of breeders who want you to sign a 700 page contract.  This is called baffelling with bullshit and is in no way a guarantee of quality.

I guess the hunt is over.

I will not know that for sure, until I see the pup this Sunday.

If you are looking at a pup for $1400 whose selling point is grand parents V1 and V2, you need to slow down and do a little more research. You are about to be had.

Are the parents titled in anything? Are they charging different prices for different sexes? IMO, I don't like breeders who charge more for one sex over the other. And I don't like breeders who rely only on the fact that the grandparents or great-grandparents are titled in something, and did well. Did the parents do anything?

The parents are NOT titled, and have done nothing more than have litters, but are active in Shutzhund and are SCH2's.
