What would cause this randomly though (if it wasn't medical)?

If all of a sudden your dog started footing the hurdle or wouldn't out. Would you wash out the dog or try to fix the problem? Why is gunfire reaction such a deal breaker?

100% Correct, which is why the foundation work is so crucial!

In times of stress, people/animals will revert back to their comfort zone. Fight or flight

You can correct it, but it will always be there.

This video shows a pup which has received "gunfire foundation work", this is her first time under gunfire and bite work with a hidden sleeve.

I live near a trap field; there are many dogs here of all breeds ranging from my GSD to GSP's, Goldens, Labs and Gordons to Bischons and Yorkies.. Not one of these dogs ever cowers from a gun shot and I'm pretty sure some of them are lacking in "courage". They have been conditioned to the sound from continued exposure.

That's a good start, hearing the sound, but  put some pressure or stress on them at the same time. See what happens then.

Just saying that most dogs can be desenitized to ignore just about anything. Proving it's genetic or not may not be possible without honest input from the breeder or others who have intimate knowledge of  the congenital temperament of the dogs in the immediate pedigree and their sibs.  If those dogs needed special handling to not run from a gun shot, etc then I think the odds are that the dog in question will need it too.

The most aggressive dogs here are the little ankle biters;  they don't shy away from a gun shot and I'm pretty sure that most of them wouldn't run from a guy in a bitesuit wearing a sleeve. They are relentless little shits.
