Just heard that apparently some loon is scattering peanut butter sandwiches with rat poison in them around, in

        Crowthorne
         Wokingham
          Ascot
          - especially "The Lookout"
and surrounding areas.
FOUR DOGS already DEAD,  eleven more very sick.

Police say everyone should muzzle while walking in the area until these 'people' are caught.

What reasons?

My sons live in Bracknell, Berkshire and this was in Bracknell News yesterday...

PET lovers have been advised to take sensible precautions but not be caught up in rumours or panic following the deaths of two dogs from suspected poisoning.

Councils and a vet say there has been no evidence to back up rumours on social networking sites that up to seven dogs have died and that poisoned sandwiches were left in a park.

Two dogs died - one last week and the other a week before - after visiting Heathlake nature reserve off Nine Mile Ride in Crowthorne.

Vet Nadia Mongelli, from Kynoch Vets in Crowthorne, where the dogs were treated, said it seemed they had been poisoned but it had not been possible to tell what substance it was. She said: "As far as we can know, it's two dogs and we don't know exactly what it's from yet either."

She advised dog owners: "Keep dogs on leads for the time being, be careful but there's no need to panic or spread rumours."

Wokingham Borough Council's countryside coordinator, Chris Buggy, said staff had searched the park but had seen no evidence of packets of rat poison or poisoned food, and that no sightings had been reported to them. He said: "There seems to be an awful lot of rumours flying round."

There had also been rumours that dogs had fallen ill after visiting Swinley Forest near the Look Out Discovery Centre in Nine Mile Ride, but Bracknell Forest Council said it had not received any confirmed reports of this.

Police spokesman Criag Evry said the neighbourhood police team is monitoring the situation and said: "We are advising dog owners to be vigilant and to follow the advice on posters being put up in the area."

Surely the more people hear about this and get warned, the better ?

Sue - I got it from Andrew Dicker who is usually far too sensible to panic unecessarily,  this was 'hot off the press' from his
Friday pm Training Club and may therefore update what the papers said yesterday. 
Anyone SEEN what the Police posters say, yet ?  Maybe they say: Play it safe, muzzle your dog. ?
Anyway, I don't think it matters (except to the poor owners) whether it is four deaths or two, there is still maybe something to worry about... 

Quite, Abby.  I am really not given to panic either - but this news distressed me;  I would not bet against Andrew putting it on Facebook himself.  Its more on his doorstep than mine (interesting that there are different areas mentioned to the newspaper's specific location);  but quite close enough for me to think its only sensible not to take chances, so I will be
passing it on to dog-folk around here (but with what Sereno sez added, so they can make their own minds up about the risks). 

If the main site mentioned is Heathlake Nature Reserve,  I don't know that part of Nine Mile, does it contain lakes ?
And if so, where are we at on algae blooming at present ?  Just a thought ...
