Hi,
Can anyone predict how these boys will turn out by what I describe below or is it too early to tell yet?  I realize it also depends on how the pups are raised. I plan on socializing the pup including training classes. I would like to do agility, obedience, and tracking. My last GSD was described as having a "very sound temperment with no issues."

I'm looking at 2 male pups from a litter of 5 with the below pedigree. They are now 7 weeks old.  Whenever we go to look at the litter they all greet us with tails wagging. The breeder says there isn't a dominant pup in the litter. I wish I could figure out how to post a photo on here! Anyway the pup with the blue collar does not mind being held even if I craddle him like a baby. The pup with the green collar doesn't mind being held but was shivering when I tried to craddled him. Blue pup investigates everything and is described by the breeder as a mellow boy but could be a "handful." The green boy is described as being a bit more serious. When the door was opened for the first time to go outside, blue boy was the first out the door.  When the door was opened to go outside the green guy didn't want to go out. When the pups are outside and the door is opened to come in the house, the green pup is the first one in. The blue pup is comfortable staying outside by himself. The green boy  will pull on a pant leg as will the blue pup.

I'm wondering if the blue boy is too independent or is he a mellow pup with no issues?
Does the green guy have some issues or is he just young and behaving normally?

I have not considered a puppy this young so I'm not sure what is " normal behaviour" at this age. Any predictions on what the temperment of these guys will be as adults would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Juno 11

Juno,

I am real familiar with most of these dogs in pedigree, and some offsprings especially Avar and Lary Bret Bett. If you can tell me by pm who has the litter, I may be able to help you.

take the pups individually away from their comfort zone and observe them.

What are you going to use the pup for? The blue sounds independent and confident, the green sounds a little more skiddish and may need some help building up his confidence.  JMO

The blue pup is the one I'd choose, based only on what you have observed so far. Things might change if you take them away from the comfort zone, as someone else stated.

If your not familiar enough to make a descion based on what you are seeing and describing here in your post, you should, if you have chosen a good and knowledgable breeder, let them choose for you. They know more about the lines the parents and what these puppies have displayed over 7-8 weeks over the few minutes/hours that you spent with the puppies. A few second blurb and your untrained observation's make it hard if not impossible to do better then the current parents of those kids, should be able to do.

In no way should you construe this to be mean spirited. I offer this with all the best intention. Good luck with your new kid!

Thanks for all the input. To answer Macrowe1's question.... I want him as a companion dog so he will be living in our house so I'd like an easy going guy that can be around company and other animals. I would like to do agility and/or obedience and tracking. I would explore doing Schutzhund with him if he has the right temperment for it and if I could find a club in our area.  I don't need a protection dog.
I agree with what Gigante posted about listening to the breeder. I have been talking with the breeder since they were born and have been getting weekly updates and have visited the pups 4 times now. Much of what I've said in the post is coming from the breeder's observations and opinion. I asked her which pup would be most suited for me and she doesn't have a preference.

Thanks,

Based on the little information provided - i would choose the Blue pup --  However, as stated above - you have to "test" them one-on one -- and also above --  a good breeder should be able to choose for you - based on knowing the pups and knowing your 'needs"   I know nothing of these lines - but I know a beautiful dog - when i see one - WOW !!

Hi all,
Thanks for the advice. I was set on getting the blue pup until the vet noticed one testicle had not descended. I don't know if thats an issue at 7 1/2 weeks but I don't want to neuter until at least 4 years if not at all. They will be 9 weeks on sunday and still no sign of that other testicle :(
