I mean hip x ray!

One vet I saw has a foam thing that was used for an ultrasound. The dog just was balanced inside of it and it had to be more comfortable than the table itself but I have never seen anything like that again and I don't know about for x-rays, but it seems like it would help.

A vet I used to work for had a plastic cradle that we used when doing hip/spinal xrays

Depends on the vet. Some don't use anything; the techs position the dog.

The techs position the dog Exactly and that is why techs end up hypothyroid and not vets.

They should wear lead protection and exposure monitoring badges when taking xrays.

we do but years ago the vest didn't cover the throat area  even with monitoring badges you still are exposed to alot of radiation a day.

I was a vet tech in the 80's. We used aprons and lead throat protection. The badge indicates and monitors the level of monthly exposure.

Does mechanical restrain eliminate the need for a tech to be at the table if the dogs isn't sedated?

Thats right, I started as a Vet nurse (tech) 26 years ago and the lead aprons were all we had and the fit was not good they were huge to fit large men and usually slid off the shoulders, collars and badges were not available to us for many years.
