I am curious what experiences anyone has had with a titanium cap on a canine tooth?  How long has it lasted and what if any impacts on bite work.

It depends on how damaged the tooth is.  We have a couple of K-9's that have titanium caps.  One dog has 4 titanium canines, the other only one canine capped.  The dogs have no issues and work very well.  Done properly there is no impact on the bitework.

what happened to the tooth to need a cap? I'm a dds, and i know on my patients it depends on how much tooth is actually left to cap makes a big difference on longevity of it.

I would say a little less than half the tooth.  Age is also working against us...20 months old.  Bit the welded wire kennel front.

i would think that if you have a little less than half the tooth on that long canine it would have a good chance of working. the only thing i don't know of is how well any dental cement would adhere or bond to titanium. Also, you need to make sure there wasn't any nerve exposed. If there was, then a root canal would be needed before the cap is done. I would think 20 months old would be a good age to do something like that. the tooth is in all the way and any shifting should be done.

Root canal is done.  The nerve was exposed.  I wish I would have known that it was...I was playing with her up to the time I took her in.  She never showed any signs of pain.  I hope it holds for a long time.
