I'm looking at a litter of pups, all sables. I might take one of the males if he has the temperment I'm looking for. All of the pups have black toes and I'm wondering if that's an indicator that they'll all be dark or black sables?

Thanks,
Juno11

Black toes/black nails is an indication for strong pigment, penciling and tar heels is usually associated with dark sable pattern, sable with recessive black gene or sable with recessive bi-color gene. Good luck. It can help if you post the parents pedigrees to make a guess about the colors.

Hi, Here are the pedigrees. There are some dark sables, some midtoned and some solid black. All the pups have black toes and some coats are a bit darker then others.
Thanks,
Juno 11

The father of the litter is a mid toned sable. His parents are :

father is Avar bohemia rom-pan

Like this?

He's starting his coat change on the sides finally, and a lot of black is slowly sstarting to show through, on the hocks on the back legs, and some black is coming through where the  brown is on the front of the front legs.  That picture doesn't show the coloring too well, for some reason it looks like there is brownish color on the black going down the front legs. I can't help you as far as finding a litter though.

The pups are more than likely with pencil toes = black sable and will be black recessive due to the mom.

Male (Sable / Sable) + Female (black / black) = All pups will be Sable with black recessive.

Male (Sable / B&T) + Female (black / black) = 1/2 will be Sable with black recessive, 1/2 Black&Tan with black recessive,

Male (Sable / black) + Female (black / black) = 1/2 will be Sable with black recessive, 1/2 all black.

Just wanted to throw this in, a sable can have tar heels and pencil marks and not carry the recessive for either black or bi color. My sable boy is out of two sables with tar heels and pencil markings and has never thrown anything but sables. There were sables and bi colors in his litter and bi colors and blacks directly behind him and nothing but sables. So that is not always true. We have had this discussion several times on here about it.
By the way GSDGuy I love your pup's coloring--especially those feet.........
