So I finally clicked on that favorite dogs link.  Not really knowing when it was implemented I find myself loving that thing.  Would be interesting to see people post pics of your current favorite top dogs.

Heres mine.

Beutiful dogs they are just to sloped back and legs but stunning dogs otherwise

Gorgeous dogs!  you sure have a certain "type" don't you! ( good eye)  Both the SL and WL shown here are exceptional examples of the breed. Would be proud to have any of them eating cookies on the couch :)

Those are very interesting pic. Thank you for putting here. While going down the page, I was reminded of a post I made awhile back. The post refered to the show and work lines becoming blended so much that in the post I said : If you compared the out line of a GSL and the modern WL, you would not be able to tell the difference between the two. Of course, I was mocked for the statement, but these pictures deffinately support my observation. That is the inevitable result of breeding WLs for the show ring.

Good thread. I have to go back a few years to pick favorites. I don't care for the coarseness and the heads of many current SL's.

I prefer a more athletic look, not so much stop and longer muzzles like these SL dogs. I don't know enough of the WL's to pick favorites but I think I would like the conformation of more of today's WL's than SL's.

myret - you are confusing the way in which they are stacked for their backs being too sloped......

in show lines, massive arched heads are the flavor of the day.... but not what is stated in the standard.

http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/german_shepherd_dog/structure_information/4.html

"The head is wedge-shaped, and in proportion to the body size (length about 40 % at the height at the withers), without being plump or too elongated, dry in the overall appearance and moderately broad between the ears.

Seen from the front and side, the forehead is only slightly arched and without any or with only a slightly indicated middle furrow.

The ratio from the cranial region to the facial region is 50 % to 50 %. The width of the cranial region more or less corresponds to the length of the cranial region. The cranial region (seen from above) tapers evenly towards the nasal bridge with gradually sloping, not sharply depicted stop in the wedge-shaped facial region (foreface) of the head. Upper and lower jaws are powerfully developed.

The nasal dorsum is straight, any dip or bulge is undesirable. The lips are taut, close well and are of dark colouring.

The nose must be black.

The teeth must be strong, healthy and complete (42 teeth according to the dental formula). The German Shepherd Dog has a scissor bite, i.e. the incisors must interlock like scissors, whereby the incisors of the upper jaw overlap those of the lower jaw. Occlusal overlay, overbite and retrusive occlusion as well as larger spaces between the teeth (gaps) are faulty. The straight dental ridge of the incisors is also faulty. The jaw bones must be strongly developed so that the teeth can be deeply embedded in the dental ridge.

The eyes are of medium size, almond-shaped, slightly slanted and not protruding. The colour of the eyes should be as dark as possible. Light, piercing eyes are undesirable since they impair the dog’s impression."

 stated another say.......
"The head should be in proportion to the body size (in length approximately 40% of the height at the withers) and not coarse, overrefined or overstretched(snipey). In general appearance, it should be dry with moderate breadth between the ears.
The forehead when viewed from the front or side is only slightly arched. It should be without a center furrow or with only a slightly defined furrow.
The cheeks form a gentle curve laterally without protrusion toward the front. When viewed from above, the skull (approximately 50% of the entire head length) tapers gradually and evenly from the ears to the tip of the nose, with a sloping rather than a sharply defined stop and into a long, dry wedge-shaped muzzle (the upper and lower jaws must be strongly developed.)
The width of the skull should correspond approximately to the length of the skull. Also, a slight oversize in the case of males or undersize in the case of females is not objectionable.
The muzzle is strong; the lips are firm and dry and close tightly.
The bridge of the nose is straight and runs nearly parallel with the plane of the forehead."

I think the young Arlett dog at the very top will one day prove to be a very important dog.  A hunch.
