So I have been juggling the idea of having Ocean tattoo'd. She will be microchipped at 15 weeks (she's 11 weeks now). I have heard different things about tattooing. Her ears are errect and strong and I was told NOT to tattoo because of this (they could fall?) I have also been told that I should tattoo for good measure. What is everyone elses views?

Thank you in advance for you input!

Hi there, her ears will not fall if she is tattooed, that is rubbish. I have been a tattooist for about 18 years here in the UK and a tattoo will not fade, nor will it affect the ear carriage. I would point out that SOME microchips CAN move from the original site and I know from personal experience that a metal chain around the neck CAN affect the reader. Not all but in my case I had to remove the chain before the scanner would read. A friend of mine had his dogs chip migrate to just under the foreleg where it joins the body. So just for your info. Hope it helps.

Hi Tiffany,
Only thing I would say here is to qualify what Steve said, that there is no worries with the tattoo in the way you have been told, its a myth.   But importantly, get your pup chipped right away !   There is no need to wait til 15 weeks.   The most vulnerable time for stealing etc is whilst they are young... and a GSD puppy can be done with no ill effect at all from 8 weeks.   I do many litters for people beore the puppies go to their new homes.   Good luck with your pup.  Mo - Mascani
