How many of you brush your GSD's teeth...is it even necessary. Looks like it may be difficult thing to do ?.

We just give ours a raw meaty beef bone to chew on. Works better than brushing (we tried that on our last GSD) and it gives her something to do for a few hours.

We feed raw so honestly brushing isnt necessary.

After discussing the cost of the removal of two molars in my friends "free" Rescued labrador retriever, I brush my dog's teeth at least weekly.. sometimes more often. I also do give raw bones for them to gnaw on.
One dog develops tartar on a molar no matter what I do.. and so that I scrape and scale. The other dog does not have that issue. I still scrape anything I see.
Both of my dogs like it. They see me go and get the cup of water and sit in the the chair where the teeth brushing happens and both come over and try to be "first." I scale the teeth first with dental tools (if needed) and then brush with dog tooth paste and then rinse with an enzymatic rinse.
Prevention can be 9/10ths of the cure.....

My moms beagle loves to chew on anything, he chews things so thoroughly
the vet says he doesn't need brushing or cleanings. My younger dogs like to chew, but not to the degree of my moms Beagle. So, once a year they get a vet cleaning. I would say they get thier teeth brushed 2-3 times a week. But, I have an old GSD who does not like to chew on anything, vet says her teeth are good, but daily brushings are required to keep the plaque from building up. I use reqular dog tooth brushes on the young dogs and sonic type electric brushes on the old dog. They don't seem to like it, but do tolerate the process and don't run away when they see the tooth brushes and cup. The young ones liked it a first for some reason, I guess it was a new experience for them and thought it was fun for a while.

I brush my dog's teeth pretty regularly. I started out just letting him kind of chew on the toothbrush with yummy turkey flavored toothpaste on it and gradually began brushing around. Now, he doesn't mind it a bit.
