My boy was NOT chipped and he ended up with cancer...hmmm maybe there is something to the opposite they should look into

Technique is the cause of migration.

I have had one migrate as far as the left shoulder - when I first began microchipping, she was the second one I did, as far as I am aware, and I check carefully when dogs come back to classes, no problems.  Do em very slowly....

A little tip for people that microchip their litters - I always put in the information field that the microchipper is the breeder also, and could I be informed if the dog is found wandering or in a rescue.    I have been informed once, and it was a genuine loss, not an abandonment, I have been informed from a rescue in Northampton who couldnt trace the owner, and I had bred the animal, so went and collected him - to find that he had been left with an elderly aunt who couldnt cope and had abandoned him.....and it would also give me a reason to question owner care if the dog was reported more than once to me, to be in a rescue awaiting collection.   Just a thought.   Mo

Thanks for extra replies!

I am going to an upcoming health clinic and they offer both microchip and tattoo.

I liked the tattoo idea as it is, relatively, painless and goes on the inner thigh like it was being drawn with a pen.  But, I worried that somebody might steal her and then just buy a dog tattoo pen and change the numbers. Thus, I started to lean towards the microchip...

Thanks again for the responses,

How are tatoos and microchips tho well-meaning,a guarantee that dog wont be stolen,
or even that dog would ever be returned to rightful owner?

Peter,

They are required by rule for a dog to be accepted into a breed survey. So, if you want your dog to be able to breed and pass a breed survey than, I believe, they must be microchipped or have a tattoo.  But, someone can correct me if I am wrong!!

Well, I wondered about that too..

When my girl Mira was 2 years old my sister-in-law was patting her & noticed a lump between
her shoulder blades, we were on vacation up north so figured it was a bee sting.

Sure enough, (As dawn broke over marblehead).......I realized it was her micro-chip!

The micro-chip caused Mira to have a small lump, about the size of an acorn.

Mira is 11 years old now, and the lump is exactly the same as when she was two....
she is very healthy and active, no meds, and she runs very fast!

I still micro-chip all my dogs, the main reason is that, they can't talk!

They can't guarantee the dog won't be stolen; but they do prove ownership in a court of law.  In the case that the dog is lost, animal shelters

and vet clinics scan the dog and are given your name and addres to be able to return the dog to you.

Kind of like a license tag that never falls off.

We have always microchipped our dogs. One of our dogs did end up with cancer at age nine however I don't think the microchip was the cause.

Two of my three dogs are microchipped. Ace came from the breeder with one and I had Janna done when she was vaccinated. I will likely also have them both tattooed as well just because if for some reason the dog does go missing most people will know to look for a tattoo on a purebred dog but won't think to take the dog in to check for a microchip. My sister said she has her dogs tattooed with their CKC#. It made sense. They both get their hips x-rayed in may and June so since they will be sedated I will have them tattooed as well. They also wear collars with their rabies tag And their name and phone number. LOL. Overkill? I've had a dog go missing once with a tattoo and no collar and it took them almost two weeks beforw they saw the glaring tattoo in his ear, and I've had that same dog stolen once as well. I am just paranoid. Tattoo and chip and you can guarantee the dog is yours if for some reason the chip migrates and can't be found. My third adult GSD is a BYB dog so no chip or tattoo. This far she has been healthy so haven't wanted to put her under just for a tattoo and she is a bit uppity and does not tolerate the vet very well so I haven't considered a chip though I may this year. Otherwise she will get tattooed when she is spayed.
