Some years ago I was concerned about whether to test my dog for DM or not.  I decided to send off a saliver sample to the USA ( which is not cheap).  I awaited the results and when they came back The result said the two dogs I tested definatly was subject to the desease. In fact I was told the Dog would not live longer than 5 yrs , but would most likely show signs much sooner than this.

Well the bitch lasted about 6 yrs and died after her puppies died inside her. The Dog is still alive at 8 yrs old and is sounder that a two yrs old. He is as fit as a fiddle. Because of the test I decided not to use him at atud and wished I had not listened to these expert's that know it all

I sincerely hope that your dog never develops the disease - it is horrible, but you might well be jumping the gun. DM is a late onset disease, and generally speaking 8 yrs old would be the lower end of the age range that it would tend to show up. So because your dog is fit now, it doesn't mean he won't still go on to develop the disease sad to say.

I just got my dog, Dino, DM DNA test back, he is clear (n/n) But it was always explained to me that affected means that they have the "gene" for DM, it doesnt mean that he will show signs.  So even if your dog is affected doesnt mean that he will get DM but he can pass on that gene to his offspring.

Kind of like HD, I have seen dogs that have HD and never show signs, but they do have it.

Like i said this is how it was always explained to me, so I may be wrong...

You are absolutely right Jessica. May or may not actually develop the disease but has the gene for DM. Glad to hear you tested.

But also 8 yrs old is too early to say that he won't go on to actively develop the disease, it may still show up if it is going to in the next few years.
