Runag

Hi all
I have a 10 month male GSD who has a great temperament. However, he is becoming very protective when in my vehicle, he looks and sounds really vicious and nasty if anyone comes anywhere near. He is the same around the house and today a caller was leaving and got really frightened when the dog came running straight up to him with head and tail up and the hair going up on the back of his neck.  He just ran round him and came to me when called.  He is not at all vicious with other dogs and is normally fine with other people once he has been introduced to them - he just doesn't like strangers in his backyard.  I have been doing a lot of obedience training with him and am now starting tracking with him which he loves,  The person I go to for the training is a long way from me (250 miles ) so I go for a few days and then come home and work every day with my dog.  I am considering bite work for schutzhund but am a bit worried that will make him vicious with people around our property - can anyone advise?  I would also be interested if you could look at his pedigree and give me your thoughts as to his suitability for this type of work.  His recent ancestors have not been worked as far as I know but back a couple of generations and they are a good mix of work and show.  To me he is just a big softie but he is not frightened of anything.  Of course, I hope you will all say his ancestry is fantastic - it looks it to me,  but even if you don't - i love him anyway!  His kennel name is Celtacastus Ventura and i have registered him on the database.  Look forward to hearing from you.

Schutzhund puts discipline in the dog, also you did get a shepherd being more aggravated in his territory is not too uncommon. Seems like more than anything he just needs more training, I would have the Schutzhund club look at him and see what they say.

Hi Fenrir, thanks for taking the time to reply.  I thought I'd made my message too long so reposted to ask about the bloodlines.  I think you are right, we live right out in the country and don't get many folks calling so he is just looking after his place.  However, he has never tried to bite and I was worried that the bitework might make him more inclined to do so. Thanks again.

the important word is "correct"....

I think the question should be, is my dog capable of doing SchH?

It is absolutely a rewarding journey when you actually train and title your own dog.  Opposed to buying it trained or letting the dog take the journey to a trainer to try to title it.

Hi, Slamdunc
we are very much together and I train with my dog.  In fact he won't actually do anything for anyone else.  I can't train him by myself though and need guidance on how to do it hence the visit to the trainer.  Appreciate and agree with the sentiment though :)

I just can't get past the fact that he doesn't like strangers in his back yard. How old is he?

Still young. If he can do it, it will be good for confidence and socialization if you live in a secluded area.

If trained properly, you will at the very least have control.
