If I may....

Was your DM diagnosed dog ever DNA tested? Which test? The results?

Were either of your DM dog's parents ever DNA tested for DM? Which Test? The results?

Were any tested using both the Flash test and the OFA test? Results?

With my dog that I have now that has DM I did the test thru OFA..

Interesting. I have been wondering whether any dogs have had both flash test and DM DNA test and whether the results 'matched' and resultant outcomes.

Neither were available in my DM dogs day.

A friend has a 5 year old that had numerous spinal and hip problems beginning as a young puppy. When he was around 2, he was tested using both protocols. The Flash test indicated he had an active case of DM, the OFA protocol identifed him as a carrier. After surgical intervention that included surgery for cauda equina (sp?) and a hip replacement, he's doing much better. I guess the jury is still out on which test was correct.

My best friends dog that was put down recently was not vet diagnosed as having DM as she went downhill within a few months and didn't see the vet in that time as we suspected it was DM and my friend didn't have the funds at the time to run a bunch of diagnostic tests. We did the test through vetdnacenter.com in Ohio and she tested at risk A/A. She had every symptom, toe dragging, hooking the hind legs, falling over due to weakness in hind end, dragging her back end at the end of it all along with the beginnings of incontinence, etc...., even including some hoarseness of her bark. She was 9 1/2 years old. Neither of her parents we DM tested.

The answer to all the questions is no. My female that had DM was a stray-don't think that all those tests would have made a difference in the outcome. I am also really glad I owned the dog even if she had DM

I'm not intending to be insensitive here, but how many of these dogs are show line? The reason for this question is that the unnatural skeletal development of the back and rear assembly could have some correlation with DM during the evolution of that change in anatomy. I'm aware that DM is not restricted to the GSD, but if you look at the extremes in other breeds, there just might be a causal affect, inadvertently, during the selection process for extreme angulation in whatever breed.

Working lines get DM too. It has nothing whatesoever to do with conformation. Go to the OFA database and look for the dogs that have tested at risk. You will find working lines there. If that's not good enough, you can always start a new thread asking if any here have had WL dogs with DM.

Here is the dog I lost to DM (never actually tested, but exact symptoms.)
Yes, he was AM/GSL cross, but not over angulated IMHO. Maybe it is just common in some specific show lines?
