Hello,

We have a 4 month old GSD puppy who was playing a rough game of tug a war with a family friend. We noticed that there was blood in his mouth and upon closer inspection, noticed that one of his two top front teeth had been crooked...almost looked loose. And the second one had been pulled out. I could not tell if it had been broken from the base or if it was the adult tooth coming in from behind it. Our puppy drank some water which stopped the bleeding. His behavior has not changed and the teeth do not seemed to be bothering him as he is still playing and chewing all of his toys. Is this normal? I know that puppys teeth start falling out around this age. Is this something that I should bring him to the vet for? Thanks in advance for any advise!

Hi:

At this age, it could very well be adult teeth.  I would take your pup to the vet's ASAP.  I hoped you saved the tooth and put it on ice.  Years ago I had 2 Australian Shepherds- 4 month old bro and sis.  The sis caught one of her premolars in her brother's choke chain,  The tooth was hanging by a thread.  Like you I wasn't sure if it was a baby tooth or an adult tooth.  I took her to a dentist vet and he was able to implant the tooth back.  It was a $700 operation but well worth it.  The vet predicted the tooth would last a couple years.  Well many Best In Specialty wins and a Best in Show win later, the tooth held.  In fact the bitch passed away at 14 yrs and the tooth was still in place.  After this incident, my dogs never wear choke chains unless they are on a leash.

Please don't wait  for feedback from the forum- this is too important to your pup's well being not to have the teeth checked out asap.

Best wishes.

Poor baby! It could just be adult teeth, but better safe than sorry. I'd take him to the vet just in case.
