What are breeders refering to when the have "DNA" listed along with hips/elbows?

Honestly, that AKC has a DNA profile on file. DNA profile is required on all imprted dogs prior to registering
a litter and for Studs fathering more then 3 litters a year and 5 a lifetime (I think, if I remember correctly)

ok, so it's something puppy owners can compare against to make sure the pedigree has the right fathers listed then?

that is correct.

The DNA indication behind the dogs' name means that particular dog's DNA has been collected and stored in a repository for future study. It has nothing to do with identifying parentage.

but you could use it that way if necessary, right?

I suppose it could be if the dog's owner would agree to it. You'd have to contact OFA and ask them.  They do respond to emails.

I know AKC requires DNA on all imported dogs, before allowing any offspring to be registered.
Yes you can use the DNA to verify parentage. Some breeders will do multiple sire litters, so they need a way to tell which pups are from what sire.

I was thinking DNA on file for AKC. Sorry.
