Yuuki

Hello everyone!

I´ve recently brought home a GS puppy (he´s my first GSD), now he is about 10 weeks old and very very playful.
At home, he plays with everyone and bites almost everything, but i´ve begun to notice he seems much more persisting and tenacious when he´s playing with me, bitting me much more and much harder than he does with the rest of the people back home. In the other hand, it´s also true that he obeys me more than he does with the others...
I would like to ask you, what do you think i can/should do about is bitting!? I Love to play with him, and i don´t want to discourage his bitting, only want him to know when it´s alright to bite and when it isn´t...
Usualy, when playing, if he bites harder than supposed, hurting me, i grab him like a mother would do to her pupp but, as i said, he can be very very tenacious :) ...
Perhaps it´s me doing something wrong!?

Hi,
In the first instance yes remember he is just a baby and doing what he would with the rest of his litter brothers and sisters, I would try initially in distracting him from biting with his play toy, ball etc. Try to be aware and prepared for his biting by watching him and becoming aware when he is likely to gain your attention.

Good luck, be patient, firm, fair and above all consistent.

Grab an old dish rag or towel and redirect the activity to that, make it a game. I would stay away from most correction at this age honestly. Do you have a Schutzhund club in your area? Maybe this little guy needs a job where he can use those little chompers of his. Pictures please :)

Congrats on your baby! But remember, he's just that, a big baby. It's just like other breeds, puppies use their mouths to investigate the world. He sounds like he's picked you to be his person though. To get him to stop biting, when he bites you, tell him no, then take a ball or toy or the dish rag/towel idea that Fenrir gave and redirect it. When he bites the toy instead of you, then praise him. He'll start to pick up the idea, usually rather quick. Are you planning on doing anything with him in the future, like sports, Schutzhund, agility, etc? If so, definately check out your local Schutzhund club. Members can usually give really good advice. Hope this helps! Send pictures and updates!

Hi there,

Thank you all for the feedback!
I´ve been reading your suggestions and will follow them, seems he really needs to redirect all that energy!
About the schutzhund club, his breeder is affiliated to one, and told us to bring him to the club next month so he could start his training.
We took him yesterday to the vet and found out he has an otitis, the vet said that he would do fine...i started the treatment but now i´am a little concerned about his ears :/
Picture of him taken yesterday, with 2 and a half months and 12kg

What a beautiful puppy!

Yes, biting is going to happen with a  GSD, but the good news is they do grow out of it.
Make sure he has lots of bones and toys to chew on to relieve his itchy teeth, and as someone else mentioned, when he goes to bite you, redirect it to a toy.
I did teach my one GSD not to bite me by firmly  and consistently reprimanding him every time, in fact, if we (4 of us) were lined up at the counter, he'd skip my feet and go to the next one and attack it.

It never stopped him from biting as an adult the   'bad guys".

All the best with your little guy, he is gorgeous.
