If the other mother will take your puppies then yes put them on her asap.  I had my dog on amoxi while she was nursing with no problems.  My vet had no problem with the puppies nursing while she was on it.  Good luck!

Yes, also I would take a cloth and wipe it on the bitch, and her pups, and then wipe it on the newborn pups to give them her smell, so she will be more inclined to accept them.

Petoiasis, there are likely other reasons the vet doesn't want the pups to suckle. If she is getting 'water' (intravenous fluid) under the skin, it is because she is dehydrated (not enough water in her body) and having the pups nurse would make this worse.

I think you should follow his advice, and either feed the pups by bottle, or try to get the other female to let them nurse.

Okay, I looked it up, and the company that makes Amoxil says it is safe to use during pregnancy, and will be passed to the pups through the breast milk. It does NOT say this will be harmful in any way, though.

With the correct formula a puppy should be okay with only 24 hours of mother's milk.  Use good puppy formula.

You can purchase puppy formula with colotrum in it to help boost the puppies immune system. Amox is not harmful for the puppies to digest through feeding once the mother is strong enough to take care of her puppies. Don't wait too long though to put the mother back with the puppies since milk supply meets milk demand, & if there was no demand for milk for a while should won't produce enough once placed back.
24 hours won't make a big difference but a few days will. I hope she is feeling better.
You can keep the mother dog with her puppies to help keep them warm, clean up & bonding, but but a large t-shirt on her with the end secure around her abdomen so the puppies can't nurse from her yet.

Small puppies need to suckle frequently.  They spend most of their first week either attached to a nipple or sleeping. They get dehydrated very quickly if they are not nursing or being fed by bottle. I hope the vet has given you good instructions on how to feed them. You must rub their bottom after feeding to make them poop and pee. This is VERY important, as they can get very sick if they aren't getting rid of body wastes. They will have trouble controling their body temperature at this age too, and will need either a heat lamp or a heating pad designed especially for puppies. One made for humans is not safe, as it can get too hot and burn them. It also won't be chew-proof.

Can someone here give Petoasis a good link to info on caring for orphaned puppies? There's a lot to know, and I'm just skimming the surface here!

The best you can feed newborns is goat milk, it 's the most similar to mother milk and I one time a puppy 10 days old on Amoxicillin, it was not harmful. You have to be careful when you try to put them to your other female, she might want to kill them. But I raised up a whole litter with goat milk, because the dam had no milk at all and their where fine, specially when they got the first 24 hour milk from their mother, thats where their develop their immun stystem and she might still produce milk after 10 days, you can feed her the goat milk too, it is producing mother milk. Wish you the best.
