FallonGSD

It seems like every time I give my girl a bath, a day later she smells like a dirty outside dog. ( I only let her outside for bathroom breaks and walks. ) I scrub her down 2 times with dog shampoo, then dry her with towel and dryer. I don't know what to do to keep her smelling pleasant. I spray her with a doggy deoderizer whenever she gets too stinky, but that only lasts for a few hours. She doesn't smell like poop or urine, she smells more like a dirty wet dog. Also, she sheds like crazy. Is there any de-shedder you could recommend? I used a simple de-shedder brush (with the little metal bristels), but it doesn't seem to work in her hair. Any advice would be appreciated! Thank you & Happy New Year!

What food are you feeding her?

That is a good food. Maybe you could try changing protein? If she is eating the chicken and rice maybe try the lamb and rice... or vice versa.

I would try adding some Wild Alaskan salmon oil and also some Vitamin E(200IU daily) to her food. That will help with the shedding and will also help her have a nice coat on her too.

If you bathe her to much that will deplete the coat and could add to her "smelly" issue. I personally bathe my dogs once a month or every other month. Both of them come inside at night. My female is outside during the day. I brush my dogs every other day. That removes any dead hair and also gets rid of some of the extra dirt. Brushing will also help release some of the oils in the skin, which will help keep a nice skin and coat on the dog too..

Hope this helps..

Sounds like her body may not be totally agreeing with her diet.    Excessive shedding and bad odor is a very common side affect of a dog not on the right diet.   Try a grain-free diet with a different protein, like Innova Evo red meat or Taste of the Wild.

The best solution would be a raw food diet.  If you get the ingredients and ratios correct, I'd gaurantee she'd shed a whole lot less, smell much better and even have better, less smelly stools.

Did you check her teeth and ears?

Dogs smell like dogs this will not change.
They do not need baths unless they have gotten into something, it's not good for them and won't change what they smell like.
More harm than good in fact, be careful what products you use on your dog.
They shed more than normal probably because you keep them inside.
This too is a fact.
It's more than you can keep up with by brushing.
Constant baths and obsessive brushing create an odor problem.
It can be but is not usually a food problem as suggested, it is simply natural for a dog to smell like a dog and shed fur.
There is no magic cure.

There is no breed on the planet ( in my opinion) that sheds like a GSD.  There is hair all over the place all the time.  When i put the dogs to bed at night I am often greeted by giant balls of fluff that magically appear overnight.  GSD's need time outside and LOTS of it.  Yes they are great house dogs but outside is important. Change her food for sure if there is an odor, she should smell like a dog. Dog odor should not stink though. I would check her ears for infection if she is actually stinky.  I know this is a very young pup but was she recently spayed?  dogs that go under for surgery will often blow coat and be almost bald a few weeks after a surgery.  Also if she is coming into heat she could be blowing her coat as well.  Really hard to say without seeing her.

Hi Fallon, my puppy started to have an unusual smell, very strong, then I wash him with a shampoo with perioxido de benzoilo, it  gave me good results, he has not smell at all. I use it since many years ago. By now I doesn't need it  any more (you can ask it to your vet just in case). Now I bath him just with water (it's very very hot here). When winter begins I'll bathe him with white soap. I hope it is useful for you. Good luck
