Jodi, are you sure that's a liver? (Could be an odd-colored photo). Liver is the complete absence of any and all black on the dog - the gene dilutes the black into brown. The nose, lips, eye rims, paw pads, and anything else that would usually be black on the dog is brown/liver.

As most are aware, I used to breed  for blues. I loved everything about them, especially the color, while on the same note, I truly do not like the liver ones.
As I have become more educated on the German Shepherd breed, I opted OUT of the blue program, although I still have dogs that if mated, I know without doubt, I will get blues.
I've graduated to the educated side of Shepherds.
BUT;for everyone that states they are inferior on any other level than their color, they are sadly mistaken.    IMO
This is the pic of my blue pup that I so ignorantly gloated,
Blue pups for the new year,a few years ago.

And THIS is his Brother!

This liver dog came up when I looked at reverse line breeding for Pike Schafbachmuhle:

With the inbreeding/linebreeding, I'd imagine either Pike or Forma caried the gene.

Seems that no matter how man intervens, nature finds a way to expressing itself. The beauty of genetics left to its own accord. Do know of someone with 3 beautiful liver pups if anyone is interested.

It happens in all lines. I got  liver bicolor once sired by Jago vd Lndenhalle. She was a very nice dog. There are some  posted in the pdb. Look at progeny of Bruno Midlicher Land, there is a liver sable posted there. Its just a color. Doesn't mean anything else about the dog.

blues or liver come up cause both parents carry the gene , thats why you dont see them that much as both parents have to carry the  gene.
