Konotashi

(Posted this in the all breeds section first on accident).

Before I start, let me say, I'm not going to go to a breeder who intentionally breeds livers and other dilutes.

I was wondering what the odds of finding a liver working line GSD would be, when the time comes for me to start searching for my puppy (which will be a few years). I know livers sometimes pop up in litters from time to time, but are usually kept quiet. I would be willing to wait a year or more to find the right puppy.
Don't get me wrong, I love correctly colored dogs, but I just have a thing for brown dogs.

I would want a liver that could do SchH, and there's only one breeder I have found that has livers fairly often with any sense of ethics, but they do UKC conformation (whites and such), and I very much doubt any of those dogs would be suitable for SchH.

I know it'd be a crapshoot type of guess, but I was just curious of your thoughts/guesstimations on the subject.

In my old post, I was asking which breeders may have had livers in their litters. Now I'm asking what are the possibility of being able to find a liver dog with what I want from a breeder, and how long it may take.

why not call them gsd's?  You mean  to tell me the livers sired recently by VA Larus Batu,  and several VA Timo daughters have produced livers, you mean they produced mix breeds, and th

VKGSDs

I've never seen a liver GSD.  Not saying they don't or can't exist, but I go to a lot of GSD events, photograph a lot of shows and events, and I've never seen one.  I have seen a couple of blues (one of my dogs has a littermate that had a blue puppy). Honestly I think there's a higher probability of you going to another breed that is already liver colored and somehow finding one that can do SchH than finding the exact GSD that you want and happens to be liver colored.

I personally know of one 100% working lines breeding that produced a single liver pup in the litter, so the genetics can be found in the working lines as easily as in the show lines, regardless of what anyone says...but as you already know, Konatashi, it's not something a breeder is going to be thrilled about, or brag about (although that single liver pup was as healthy as the rest of the pups, and though it will never be bred, it matured into a very good working dog).  Bloodlines-wise, you'd find just the old, established working kennels there, Bungalow, Karthago, Korbelbach, Tiekerhook...nothing that would cause you to expect an off-color, and there wasn't any linebreeding in the pedigree.  I believe there was at least on breeder who posted on this board about his unexpected surprise of liver pups in a working line litter of his...I think that was a year or two back.

I don't see anything wrong with putting it out there that you'd be quite interested in giving a working home to a liver pup, anymore than it would be wrong for someone to make it known that they'd be happy to provide a home for a dwarf pup--these puppies DO get whelped, from time to time, and I'd think a good breeder would be pleased to know that there's someone readily available who has no designs on breeding the pup, will provide it a good, working home and can see the beauty in the unexpected trait. Best of luck to you in your search.

I have seen a liver GSD. He was about nine months old and at least 120 pounds. He wasnt fat, just absolutely huge! The owners think they have hit the goldmine with him, and he must be bred ASAP! Ugh...

I just hope his hips and joints can hold up, for the dogs sake...

There are pictures on this thread and on the pedigrees.  Since I have a computer dial  up I cannot see any pics and cannot make the link a linkable one.

so if someone will do that please.
