I have an opportunity this afternoon to obtain a "Purebred" German Shepherd Dog for free. The owner said the dog will come without any papers, Yet will "Sell" the akc paperwork. I really do not understand this at all ??? Can anyone shed some light on this for me...? Rick

Sounds like you basically have someone that wants to place their dog ASAP without a fee, if you want the AKC papers then they'll charge you for them.  If you don't plan on showing/breeding you really don't need them.  You can still show in AKC down the line if you should choose to do so, you can apply for PAL and you would just need to show 2 photos of the dog for them to see that she is a pure bred GSD.  I've done this with several dogs that were adopted.

uhhmm...Thanks so much Amy...No, I don't plan on showing. Mainly for personal protection more than anything.

Quite simple, they are giving the dog away free, more than likely to go into a pet home where papers are really not wanted(at least not needed).
If the dog is not spayed or neutered, you know someone will come along and want the FREE dog, and, since there are papers with it, will feel they may want to breed it and make a few bucks.
Depending on the entire set of circumstance, I would think the "giver" might give the papers anyway if the "getter" was needing papers for competition of some sort, or some other, Not For Profit endevour.
I know I would not give the AKC papers for free, if giving away a registered dog, Unless for Good Cause.

Yes she IS intact, But absolutely no breeding planned here. Strictly for ppd. I realize I will have to get her fixed.

Pretty common way to place a dog. Good for someone who wants a purebred but has no plans to compete or breed. The breeder finds a good home for the dog, but is pretty certain the dog won't be used for breeding (still a possibility of course but less likely without papers). Another thing the breeder may do is give the new owner the papers on a limited registration once the new owner has proven that the dog has been neutered. Then the papers are really just a nice thing to have, but a nice gesture on the breeder's part.

Rick...There's really only 1 reason to have a dog registered...and that's for Breeding...I mean if you even were to work her and want to show her in say...Schutzhund...Yes you can apply for a Scorebook either with or without a Pedigree (registration)...But you don't need one to show...

If you want to compete with your dog as purebred GSD you need papers too...otherwise they will enter your dog as mixed breed...at least that's what the SV does..
