Hi,
Can anyone recommend a chew toy for a 20 month old gsd. He Loves footballs but tends to eat them so I don't allow him have them unattended as I don't want him getting choked or an intestinal blockage. He doesn't like really hard ones, just looks at them like they're alien and won't play with them/me. He loves chasing his football and if I leave him without one he eats anything he can find in the garden.
Help..

Those are elk legs.

The larger one is still attached to the shoulder.

The dogs really like the neck/ribs... especially when there is still lots of meat attached.
There was a traechea on the most recent acquisition... it went first.

Other great things to occupy the dogs and keep them busy chewing are large, gristly pieces of fat/meat that are scraps.. and also whole tripe.
Really disgusting and smelly (the tripe), but wow, do they ever enjoy knawing up the hunks.

Hi
Those elk legs look great and I can get something similar..deer. However, they don't work very well for throwing around and having him chase them.....any other recommendations. ;-) for games.

No, elk/deer parts are not really great interactive toys....   certainly agree on that!   (imagine heeling down the field with a slimy elk foreleg under my arm)

Save the carcasses for entertaining your dog when you don't want him to eat the garden.

Try different toys for playing with/training your dog..

See which ones your dog will rate as high value..
These "special" toys are not to be left around for chewing, but used only WITH you..  as in, YOU are the one who brings out/puts away the toy..

I use different ones with different dogs. Here are some of their favorites:

Kong on a rope.. or something similar
large tennis balls
squeaking tennis balls
squeaking tennis balls on a rope
really annoying toy that wails like a dying animal when its squeezed...
tug with handle
tug without handle
fleecy squeaking tug thing
various shapes/sizes of "air dog" toys
cotton rope toys

Main thing with interactive toys is that you get ones that will not hurt the teeth when the dog grabs it, and are large enough to not get stuck in the mouth if they grab it.

I have two identical types of certain toys.. and I use them together to get the dog to keep returning to me with the first toy and "trade" for the second one.

What are your goals with your dog??

Are you training for a specific sport/competition, or just trying to burn off energy?

Please read my message A WARNING TO ALL DOG OWNERS?

I find the very hard indistructable bone is good and can be left with not like the plastic ones.
