My female just turned 1 this week and weighed in at 56 pounds. She is lean and has a ton of extra skin on her chest and neck. Does this sound like a normal weight for her age and do you think she will fill out within the next year or so?

If she is lean, she will fill out -- if you feed her enough high quality food, of course.

56 is in the normal range for one year.  She may only end up 60-64 lbs, but that's ok.

Enjoy your dog, and avoid "my dog is bigger than your dog" conversations.

My 16 month old male is 68 lbs. He looks like a midget compared to other GSD's, but he's carrying less weight, so he's quicker/faster, more agile, and more importantly, he is within the breed standard for his age.

Hello, I have 2, 14 month old female littermates, and they are lean and move like a big cat. They weigh in at about 60 lbs right now. Fast and agile as heiko stated. Great fo hips as well. Keep up the good work!                   Pete

Avoid the "Brag about your big female" conversations. Keep within the breed standard. Plus your lean and small dog will live longer and be healthier than a large oversized dog. I have always wanted a smaller GSD and I always seem to end up with the large and outside of breed standard shepherds even though they come from dog that are within standards. Seems to be my luck. I wish I had a 56 lb female!! Mine is 85 and extremely lean (the way I like them).

My female turned 1 last week and weighs 58lbs. I absolutely love her size. When I first got her she was very stocky and I was a bit worried I was going to end up with a big girl. She slowed down in growth around 6 months and is now a perfect size to me. I'm guessing she'll weigh around 63-65lbs or so when fully mature.

Dog will be the size it will be:) Do not concern your self with weight.
Dog should be skinny to the point where you should see the ribs when the dog is breathing hard or 2 last ribs if she is relaxed.  You should most definitely feel the dogs ribs if petted without much pressure. You should not see the pelvis bones sticking out.
Most people have these days fat dogs. They will tell you that your dog is too skinny. If now and then someone tells you that your dog is too skinny than your dog is probably just right.
If you feed the dog meat cooked or raw,  which contains all the nutrition then the weight will come naturally and the dog gets moderate exercise then the dog will grow to be nice athletic dog of size predisposed by genetics.
GSD is not fully grown until he / she is about 3 years.
Always make sure that your dog is little hungry and feed about 90% of what she would like to eat.
Even I should follow that rule. :)

Heiko - My male is the exact same age and weighs 68lbs as well.  Nothing but lean and I really don't expect him to fill out for awhile since he has high energy and is on a raw diet of pretty much beef.
